Work in a group of five (5) or fewer people from the same tutorial class and do an
annotated bibliography of ten (10) Malayan or Malaysian poems originally written in
English (primary sources).
“Malayan” or “Malaysian” refers to citizens who were born or who grew up in
Malaya or Malaysia, excluding expatriates or foreigners, such as Robert Raymer, who
have written about Malaya/Malaysia.
A student who wants to work alone or a group that is fewer than five people must still
annotate ten such poems.
Use the latest edition of either APA or MLA style. Generally speaking, MLA style is used in
arts and the humanities, and APA style in social and behavioural sciences.
In a group of five (5) tutorial classmates, each member is to cite and annotate at least
two (2) Malayan/Malaysian poems originally written in English but not translated into
English.
If you work alone, annotate five (5) Malayan/Malaysian poems originally written in
English but not translated into English.
Give preference to recent poems. Avoid those that are well-known, much studied or that
come with or are available with summaries or critiques.
DO NOT annotate a poem if you do not understand it or if it is as long as half a book or
one whole book.
Each annotation must briefly include the following elements of a poem, each of
which in one phrase or sentence in the present tense:
• Subgenre (lyric, narrative, dramatic, etc.), subject (content) and/or theme:
E.g., “A lyric poem about a mother who cares about. . . .” or “A narrative
poem about an unrequited love that involves. . . .”
• Style: rhetorical features or literary devices that are prominent or
significant, including the metre or rhyme used.
• Your other response or comments: strengths and weaknesses of the poem,
etc.
• Put your full name in round brackets at the end of your annotations, which
you must do by yourself. DO NOT lift or paraphrase information or details
from other direct or indirect sources.
Other Don’ts
Do NOT cite and annotate the following types of poems. Doing so will result in a fail.
• Malayan or Malaysian poems that have been translated into English from
another language.
• What is covered or taught this trimester.
• What has been covered in the literature component of the educational institutions in
Malaysia and beyond, and in the local and international tests and examinations such
as IELTS, MUET and TOEFL. There are usually summaries, critiques, study guides
and other references available for preparations for examinations, quizzes or tests.
• What is written or published by expatriates in Malaya or Malaysia no matter whether
they wrote about Malaya or Malaysia.
Ask if you are not sure.
