The Book

Die illuminierte Handschrift aus dem neunten
Jahrhundert kann jetzt ganz neu erlebt werden.
Von MARTHA PARIS

MEDIUM AUDIO

T
he Book of Kells, an illuminated gospel book,
was, historians believe, written and illus-
trated by three monks living in a religious
community on the island of Iona around
the ninth century. To protect the manuscript from
Viking raids on Iona – which is today part of the Inner
Hebrides – it was moved to mainland Ireland, first to
the monastery of Kells and then to Dublin.
Filled with vibrantly coloured vellum pages, the
book measures 33 by 25 centimetres. It’s on display
at Dublin’s Trinity College Library. Until now, it has
been possible to view only two pages of the book at
any one time. But from this year, it can be enjoyed as
an immersive experience. In the Book of Kells Expe-
rience, visitors are led past large, illuminated panels
of the pages, and there are explanations of the sym-
bols and language used in the manuscript. If they
were alive today, those three monks would be proud.

Relationship coach

Seit ihrer eigenen schmerzlichen Scheidung unterstützt Mel Murphy Paare,

y name is Mel Murphy. I’m 48,

M and I’m a relationship and divorce

coach, based in Dublin, Ireland. I’m
the owner of both Mel Murphy In-
ternational and Separation & Divorce Coaching
Ireland, and co-owner of the Divorce Coaching
Academy.
I do pre-marriage courses, couples counselling,
mediation and divorce coaching support. I also
do an online conference every year with other
experts, including a family-law lawyer, a financial
planner and a co-parenting expert. And I organize
in-person retreats for people who’ve been through
a divorce, because being with other people who
are going through the same thing as you is really
good for moral support and mental health.

~
Unfortunately, I went through my own painful
divorce about eight years ago. At the time, I was
working in IT and had a leadership position.
Once my divorce was over, I wanted to focus on

course on divorce coaching in the US, and started my prac-

I’ve been going through a transition lately. I’ve expand-
ed my practice, so I no longer focus only on divorce, but
also on helping people to avoid the trauma of divorce,
through relationship coaching and pre-marriage courses.
I’ve also expanded globally because, although I’m based in
Ireland, I have clients around the world. And a while ago,
I left my position in IT to focus full-time on my coaching
business.

~
All my coaching is done online, in part because my clients
live all over the world, but also because they want priva-
cy. A lot of them will call and not even put the video on,
especially in Ireland, because it’s a small country, where
everyone knows everyone.
When I coach couples, I talk to them separately and
then bring them together. I find that more truth comes
out when they’re not sitting next to each other, worrying
about what they’re going to say and the impact it will have.

Good to know
When Eilish wrote this song with her
brother and collaborator, Finneas, she says
she was only thinking about it as music
for the movie soundtrack. She had been in
a period of creative block, but this idea of
the doll questioning her existence seemed
to unlock something in the singer-
songwriter, and it took her just one night
to write the whole song. “The song wrote
itself,” she says. It was only several days
later that she realized, “Every single lyric
