Early Spring Garden Guide & Planter
Excellent for growing herbs, leafy greens or miniature varieties
of some vegetables, this large-capacity self-watering system is
soil-based, so you can propagate seeds, transplant seedlings or
grow larger plants directly in the soil. The height-adjustable canopy
contains a full-spectrum LED light (color temperature of 6400 kelvin)
rated for 50,000 hours of operation (8.5 years at 16 hours on,
8 hours off daily). You can control the on/off cycle manually with a
switch on the power cord, or remotely through a built-in timer and
free phone app (English only). The canopy moves on telescoping
aluminum supports to a maximum of 13" high for positioning the
light at the correct height for your plants. This allows them to grow

Each of these lights illuminates an area as long as the
fixture and about 24" wide when placed at a height of
about 1'. To increase coverage or intensity, you can link
multiple lights (up to five of the 12" fixture, ten of the
24" or eight of the 48") from a single power cord. Each
consists of a high-output LED array set in an aluminum
housing with integrated reflectors, and comes with
mounting hardware, a 13" coupler cord and a 66" power
cord. They operate on 12W, 24W and 48W respectively.

Double-Outlet Timer
To grow healthy plants with artificial light, a regular schedule
is important. This 125-volt, 15-amp indoor mechanical timer
automatically turns lights (or pumps, greenhouse heaters, etc.)
on and off. Settings are programmed in 15-minute intervals for
up to 96 settings that repeat every 24 hours (good for hydroponic
flood-and-drain pumps). Most timers have only one outlet, but
this has a pair of three-prong grounded outlets, both activated
by the timer. A manual switch can override the preset timing to
turn the system on without losing your settings. Also suitable for

Self-Watering Seed Starters
Our seed starters are some of our most popular gardening tools. They provide
water on demand through a non-rotting capillary mat and a water reservoir,
and create a supportive environment for the seedlings. The multi-legged
stand is used to tamp the soil in place and later to pop out the transplants.
A water-level indicator lets you know if any topping up is needed.

Benefits of Soil Blocking

Soil Block Molds

These reusable molds make soil blocks for starting seedlings.
When ready to be planted out, the blocks can be placed directly
into the ground. The cube mold makes twenty 3 /4" cubes; the
block mold makes four 2" blocks. The block mold comes with
inserts that can be used to make a 3 /4" cavity, so you can start a
seedling in a cube, then transfer the cube into the larger block
for further growth.

Large Soil Blocker В

Used in conjunction with the smaller soil block mold, this
4" wide mold lets you transplant seedlings that were started
in the 2" blocks as they grow and require extra room. It makes
one block at a time with a square indentation on top where the
smaller soil block can be inserted. The large block can then be
placed directly into the ground. Filled with a simple potting mix
that you prepare from coir, compost, sand and soil amendments,
the blocker forms a lightly compressed block of planting medium
that is firm enough for handling, so no pot is required. Because
the block holds moisture well and permits good aeration,
seedlings grow quickly. As roots grow to the edges, they are
naturally air pruned, forming a robust, fibrous root structure.

 Deep-Root Seed Starters
Used in commercial nurseries, these reusable deep-root seed starters
have big cells with lots of rooting area to promote faster growth. The
grooved sidewalls direct the roots straight down, discouraging root
spiralling. Each cell has an opening at the bottom that air-prunes the roots
and also lets you water from the bottom up (from a capillary mat or flood
table). Transplants slip out easily when pushed up through the bottom.
Offered with either 72 cells per tray (each cell is 11/2" wide by 3" deep) or 32
cells per tray (2" wide by 4" deep). The smaller cells are more suitable for
slower-growing plants, but either size can be used to root cuttings. Sold as
a set of three rooting trays with three matching catch trays. Both starters
measure 21"×10". These performed better than the other deep-root trays
we tested, including heavy plastic trays that cost much more.

Coir Pellets
A great medium for starting seeds or propagating
cuttings, coir is a biodegradable peat alternative
made from coconut husk fibers, a renewable by-
product of the coconut harvest. These compressed
pellets are particularly convenient because you don’t
need soil or pots. Just drop the pellet into warm water
and it expands to several times its original 13/4"×3/8"
size, making it ready for planting immediately. A fine
mesh covering holds it all together. When the plants
have grown to size, you can drop the whole thing
directly into the ground or into a planter.

Some flower and vegetable seeds are so small, they’re awkward

Most watering methods are too forceful for seed
propagation, washing soil away from seedling roots and
