Teacher-Student Ratio: It’s Impact on Passion and Performance of Teachers in Schools Division

of Bulacan

Education is vital in almost every part of the world. Research has found that education is
the strongest determinant of individuals’ occupational status and chances of success in adult
life. Education can be thought of as the transmission of the values and accumulated knowledge
of a society.
In the Philippines, public and private sectors provide education to the Filipinos.
Moreover, there are different institutions which provide quality education but not all Filipinos
can afford. As a result, the public schools are the only option for those unfortunate people of the
Philippines. Since the current population in the Philippines is about 110 million people, many of
them are students who are currently enrolled in different public schools. In connection to this, the
Department of Education need enough teachers to provide the students’ needs, hence, this is one
of the major problems in the department.
According to DepEd Order, No. 21, series of 2006, the ideal class size shall range from a
minimum of fifteen students to a maximum of sixty-five students per class, however, the ideal
class average class size shall be fifty. In spite of this order, most of the public schools exceeded
the average number of students per class. The reality of seventy to eighty students per class is
being implemented in most schools, especially those with limited facilities and classrooms. Since
classroom is limited, this is a struggle for both teachers and students. Aside from the number of
paperwork given to teachers, the number of students also exhaust the number of teachers. This
results to some impact affecting the passion and performance of the teachers.
