Module 9: Circles

INTRODUCTION
This module is written in support of the K to 12 Basic Education
Program to ensure attainment of standards expected of you as a learner.
This aims to equip you with essential knowledge on Circles.
This includes the following activities/tasks:
 Expected Learning Outcome – This lays out the learning
outcome that you are expected to have accomplished at the end
of the module.
 Pre-test – This determines your prior learning on the particular
lesson you are about to take.
 Discussion of the Lesson – This provides you with the
application of the knowledge, principles and attitude that will
help you meet the expected learning outcome.
 Learning Activities – These provide you with the application of
the knowledge and principles you have gained from the lesson
and enable you to further enhance your skills as you carry out
prescribed tasks.
 Post-test – This evaluates your overall understanding about the
module.

With the different activities provided in this module, may you find this
material engaging and challenging as it develops your critical thinking skills.

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
 illustrate a circle and the terms related to it: radius, diameter
chord, center, arc, chord, central angle, and inscribed angle.

What I Know

Directions: Given circle O below, name the following. Write your answer on
your notebook.

On circle O,
1. radius
2. chord
3. central angle
4. arcs subtended by the central angles in (d)

What`s In
Directions: Read the item carefully. Match the appropriate word in Column
A
with its description in Column B. Choose the letter only and
write
it on your notebook.

A B

1. line a. two non-collinear rays

2. angles b. usually represented a dot
3. point c. common endpoint of two non-collinear
rays
4. sides of angle d. all its angles are congruent
5. vertex e. points that are on the same line
6. collinear points f. extends indefinitely in two opposite
directions
7. diagonal g. union of two non-collinear rays with a
common endpoint
8. equiangular h. segment joining non-consecutive
vertices

What`s New

Directions: Rearrange the jumbled letters in every item to form the correct
word being described by the group of words at the right. Write
your answer on your notebook.

1. S L N A G E – union of two non-collinear rays with a common

endpoint
2. A E R T D I M E – chord that passes through the center of a
circle
3. S R D A U I – segment drawn from any point on the circle to
the center
4. C R D H O – segment that connects any two points of a circle
5. R A C – portion of a circle determined by a central angle
6. C L E R I C – set of all points that are the same distance from
a fixed point
What Is It

A circle is the set of all points that are of the same distance from a
fixed point. This fixed point is called the center of the circle.

Note: A circle is named by its center, thus the circle is called Circle O.
In symbol ⊙O.

Terms Related to Circles

A segment drawn from any point on
the circle to the center is called a radius.
On ⊙ O, the radii are OB and OF .

On ⊙ O, segments AD , BF ,CG and

HE were constructed so that their
endpoints are points on the circle.

A chord is a segment that connects

any two points of a circle. AD , BF ,CG and
HE are chords of ⊙ O.
A diameter is a chord that passes
through the center of a circle. BF is a diameter of ⊙ O. It is the longest chord
of a circle and it is twice the length of a circle’s radius.

A central angle is an angle

whose vertex is on the circle’s center,
and whose sides intersect the circle at
two points. ∠APB is a central angle of
⊙ P.
An arc is a portion of a circle determined by a central angle. AB is the
subtended arc of ∠APB in ⊙ P.

What’s More

Directions: Given Circle O below, identify whether the following is a chord,

diameter, radius, arc or central angle. Write your answer on
your notebook.
X
L
Y

O z

V
1. OX L

2. ¿
3. XE
4. ∠ LOX
5. ∠ LO V
6. VE
7. XY
8. LV

What I Have Learned

I learned that:
 a circle is a set of all points that are of the same distance point
from a fixed point called the center.
 a segment drawn from any point on the circle to the center is
called radius.
What I Can Do

Directions: Read each sentence carefully, write T if the sentence is correct

and F if it is not. Write your answer on your notebook.

1. Two radii always have the same length.

2. Two chords always have the same length.
3. All chords are diameters.
4. All diameters are chords.
5. All chords intersect at one point.
6. A radius is not a chord.
7. All diameters intersect at one point.
8. Twice the length of the diameter is equal to the length of the
radius.
