Therapy Modality: Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Creator. The solution-focused brief therapy(SFBT) evolved from an idea of Steve De

Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the late 1970s and early 1980s at the Brief Family Therapy Center

in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA (Reiter,2023).

Therapy used for what DSM-5 Diagnoses.SFBT is applied to a wide range of conditions,

such as depression, anxiety issues, substance abuse, marriage issues, and behavioral problems

(Beyebach et al.,2021). It is very applicable for persons who is motivated and who want change

in their lives and they prefer to do short-term interventions that are solution-focused.

Emphasis of Therapy Modality. The core idea of SFBT revolves around problem solving

rather than focusing on the problem. It highlights the current and future instead of the past, and it

centers on the clients' strengths, assets and abilities to bring about changes in their lives

(Reiter,2023). Definition of SFBT therapists is that they are convinced that clients possess their

already developed capacities and skills as well as required knowledge that can be systematically

used for goal achievement and cooperate with the clients accordingly to uncover these resources.

Goals of Therapy Modality. The primary objective of SFBT is to support clients in

realizing and achieving the desired outcomes in the minimum time possible. Therapists help

clients in determining their goals and also the division of their tasks into small and measurable

actions aimed at attaining their intended outcome (Beyebach et al.,2021). The purpose of SFBT

is to empower clients through emphasizing autonomy, helping to foster a belief in their own

efficacy and confidence in the ability to change events.

Notes. SFBT has its unique identity of giving solutions-oriented and brief interventions

that normally do not exceed sessions. It is a strength-based approach where a therapist looks after

the self-autonomy and determination of the client (Reiter,2023). The SFBT approaches include

emphasizing scaling questions, using miracle questions, elaborating exception questions and

using solution-focused scaling. In SFBT, therapists' facet is to help clients identify and use the

goals and resources they posses but not as a way of assisting clients in the process of coming up

with their goals and resources they already possess.

Therapy Modality. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Creator. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) created by Marsha Linehan in the late

1980s as an approach for treating people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) (Beyebach

et al.,2021). In the beginning, it was created as a modification of cognitive-behavioral therapy

(CBT) by Linehan, who identified the specific requirements of people with BPD concerning

emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, and social challenges.

Therapy used for what DSM-5 Diagnoses. At first, DBT was a tool for people suffering

from borderline personality disorder (BPD), but since then, it has been adapted and used with

several diagnoses, including mood disorders, eating disorders, substance addictions, and PTSD

(Beyebach et al.,2021). Research demonstrates that DBT is best suited for individuals suffering

with emotional regulation problems, self-harm issues, suicidal thoughts, and a long-lasting

impairment of their interpersonal patterns and communications.

Emphasis of Therapy Modality. The main focus of DBT is to teach clients emotion

regulation skills, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and practice mindfulness. DBT is

the development of a dialectical approach, mainly an intellectual problem-solving which aim the

contrasting of opinions, for example, acceptance and change (Beyebach et al.,2021). Clients

learn to develop an internal skill of accepting themselves and their situations in combination with

helping each other, which may create positive changes in their lives.

Goals of Therapy Modality. The main objectives of DBT are to overcome the

dysfunctional behaviors that negatively affect quality of life, develop better emotional regulation,

have good interpersonal relationships, and have a good quality of life (Beyebach et al.,2021).

DBT has a mission to help clients to live a life that values them, seeking to change the person's

behaviors, increasing self-awareness, and promoting a sense of mastery and competence about

their emotions.

Notes. DBT therapy is typically offered in a structured manner where the individual

therapy, group skills training, phone coaching, and therapist consultation team meetings are

components of the DBT (Beyebach et al.,2021). DBT psychotherapy comprises the four distinct

skills training modules of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal

effectiveness.DBT emphasizes the importance of balancing validation and change strategies in

therapy, acknowledging clients' experiences while also challenging them to make positive

changes in their lives.
