QUESTION: Explain how you will prevent Anaemia during pregnancy. ANSWER: Anaemia is a condition in which blood has a lower than normal amount of normal blood cells or hemoglobin. In pregnancy a woman faces a decrease in the total blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood, and when the level of hemoglobin drops below 11g/dl or haemotocrit less than 33% is considered anaemic. There are multiple measures to be implemented to prevent anaemia during pregnancy as explained below. FOCUSED ANTENATAL CARE. Antenatal clinic is one of the best way/places for pregnant women to get required health education and knowledge on ensuring their well being during the whole nine months of pregnancy and safe delivery as well as follow ups, so women need to be advised on the importance of antenatal visits. NUTRITIONAL EDUCATION Inadequate knowledge on nutrition during pregnancy is one of the factors that promote anaemia, all pregnant women should be advised to take diversified diet and prefer use of food rich in iron which are locally available. PROPHYLACTIC TREATMENT During antenatal visits pregnant women should be provided with iron ferrous sulphate 1 tab twice a day, folic acid 1 tab once a day, 4 IPT for malaria in 4 visits of four weeks interval and mebendazole 500mg or albendazole 400. TREATMENT OF ANY UNDERLYING CONDITION. During pregnancy any condition that may promote anaemia e.g malaria, hookworms etc must be considered dangerous and treated accordingly. FAMILY PLANNING The interval between pregnancies is also very important as the woman body needs to recover after birth and regain its nutritional state, thus the use of family planning is very important and women need to be advised after delivery prior to discharge. ADEQUATE FOOD PRODUCTION The government has a major role to play in this as promotion in food production at national level is mandatory for households to have food security, where availability of food is high its pretty easy to control the nutritional needs for pregnant women. NB: Anaemia is one of important factors influencing maternal morbidity and mortality and the health of the newborns, the preventive measures explained above give us a great chance of controlling its effects.
