Hollywood Portrayals of Arabians as Terrorists: Comparative Studies between “True


Lies” (1994) and “Body of Lies” (2008)

A. Introduction
Hollywood Movie Industry is the most dominant movie industry in the world. This statement
is based from Hollywood movies domination in every country. There are some factors that
caused Hollywood movies dominates around the world. One of them is the utilization of
Hollywood movies by United States Government to spread their foreign policy, propaganda,
and their depiction about some ethnic groups as their enemy (Rahayu & Meidiansyah, 2020).
In this case, the enemy of US Government is the Arabians. They portrayed them as brutal and
uncivilized religious fanatics which tried to terrorized Westerners, especially the Americans
in their Hollywood movie (Shaheen, 2003:173).
The Hollywood’s portrayal on bad Arabians is not something new in their history. According
to Shaheen (2015), Hollywood’s negative views of Arabians were started from 1921 through
The Sheik starred by Rudolph Valentino. Meanwhile, the portrayal of Arabians as terrorists
were started on 1951 through Sirocco which told the Syirian ‘fanatics’
