The Iron and steel industry forms the raw material for most of the heavy and
engineering industries. Thus, it is known as the basic industry or feeder industry. It is
heavy industry as it uses bulky materials such as iron ore, coal in large quantities and
the finished product is also bulky in nature.
Main centres of iron and steel industries in the world are the regions in the USA,
Northeast UK, Germany, Russia, Sweden, France, China, Japan and India. Main centres
of iron and steel industry in India lie in Chotanagpur plateau region and in pockets of
the Deccan Plateau. Some of the important cities are Jamshedpur, Bhilai, Durgapur,
Rourkela, Bokaro, Kulti, Burnpur, Bhadravati, Salem, Vishakhapatnam and Vijaynagar.
