STEVE BIKO:

18 December 1946:
Steve Biko is born in Tarkastad, South
Africa.

1966:
Biko begins his medical career at the
University of Natal in Durban.

1968:
Biko becomes involved in student
activism and co-founds the South
African Students' Organization
(SASO).

1972:
Biko is expelled from the University of
Natal due to his activism.

1973:
He becomes the leader of the Black
Consciousness Movement (BCM) and
is banned by the South African
government.

1976:
Biko is instrumental in organizing
protests during the Soweto Uprising
against the apartheid government's
education policies.

1977:
Steve Biko is arrested by the South
African authorities under the
Terrorism Act.

12 September 1977:
While in police custody, Biko dies from
injuries sustained during torture and
beatings.
