Qualitative research is a broad approach to inquiry that focuses on understanding the
meaning, experiences, and context of human phenomena. Unlike quantitative research, which
emphasizes measurement and statistical analysis, qualitative research seeks to explore and
describe complex social phenomena in their natural settings.
Here are some key aspects of the philosophy of qualitative research:
a) Ontology: Qualitative research is grounded in the belief that reality is socially
constructed, subjective, and context-dependent. Researchers acknowledge that individuals
and groups interpret and make sense of the world in diverse ways, and their experiences
are shaped by various social, cultural, and historical factors.
b) Epistemology: Qualitative research embraces a constructivist or interpretivist
epistemology, emphasizing the importance of understanding subjective meanings and
