Warning • Use only the power cord supplied with the monitor.

• Use only a three-wire receptacle that is properly grounded.

• When connecting a non-medical device such as a printer to

the RS-232 Interface of V24CT/V26CT, the monitor must be
properly grounded and the non-medical device may not have
a chassis leakage current above 500 µA (300 µA in the US).
If the leakage current is higher, the non-medical device must
be powered from a separation transformer. These
precautions must be taken in order to prevent the
possibility of an electrical shock hazard (to the user and or
patient) from excessive ground leakage currents from the
non-medical device such as a printer, and to maintain
compliance with IEC 60601-1-1 where applicable. This
hazard is especially prevalent when the V24CT/V26CT is
operated in battery mode.

In normal AC line operation grounding the monitor is

accomplished by ensuring that the AC line cord is connected
from the monitor to a properly grounded AC receptacle.
Alternatively and additionally, proper grounding may be
achieved by attaching a safety grounded wire to the
threaded safety ground stud found on the rear of the
monitor.

Isolation may be achieved by powering the printer through a

safety isolation transformer.

• The Plug-in Parameter Rack must be always mounted in a

horizontal position. Improper mounting of the Plug-in
Parameter Rack may fall from the wall mount or roll stand
causing a patient or user safety concern.

• The Configuration Mode does not support patient

monitoring: when the monitor is attached to a patient, it
must be in Monitoring Mode.

Preparing the Site
Prepare the site This chapter provides you with 6 key guidelines to help
you prepare the site for proper installation of the V24/
Unpack and inspect the monitor V26.

Install the monitor Before you install your monitor, you want to insure that
the site has all the requirements needed before installa-
Configure the monitor tion. You will insure the monitor will operate at opti-
mum performance by using these guidelines. You will
insure that the monitor is easy to view, operate and
maintain. Safety precautions, including proper ground-
ing and power requirements for the monitor are also
described in this section.

Site Preparation Guidelines

1. Check the Operating Environment

The first step involves checking that the operating environment is

reasonably free from dust, vibration, corrosive or explosive gases, and
is within specified temperature and humidity ranges.

The following specifications are for storage and transport.

Temperature Range:
Operating:
Model V24E/V26E and V24C/V26C
+5 to 40°C (41 to 104°F)
Model V24CT/V26CT
+5 to 35°C (41 to 95°F)
Storage: -15 to 40° C
(5 to 104°F)
Humidity Range:
Operating:
Model V24E/V26E and V24C/V26C
95% RH max @ 40°C (104°F)
(Non-condensing)

Model V24CT/V26CT
95% RH max @ 35°C (95°F)
(Non-condensing)
Storage:
90% RH max @60°C (140°F)
Altitude Range:
Operating: Up to 4,600 m (15,000 ft.)
Storage: Up to 4,600 m (15,000 ft.)

2. Position the Monitor

The second step requires that you position the monitor so that the
display is clearly visible and the controls are easy to reach.

As shown below, the monitor should be viewed at approximate eye

level from a patient bedside. The Wall Mount should be placed
approximately 1.4 to 1.7 meters (4.5 to 5.5 feet) above the floor. For
best viewing, the display should be adjusted at a vertical angle to the
user and viewed within approximately 80 degrees as shown in the
below diagram from either side (the figures given in brackets are for
the earlier flat panel display).

2 Site Preparation Guidelines

3. Verify an Appropriate Power Source

The third step involves insuring that there is a power source available
within 2 meters (6.6 feet) of the monitor.

The V24 and V26 Patient Monitors may be operated on AC line voltage
ranges of 90 to 250 Vac, 48 to 66 Hz, nominal. The voltage is selected
automatically by the switched mode power supply. The monitor’s
power cord is 2 meters (6.6 Feet) in length and must be used with the
monitor.

The V24CT/V26CT may be operated from one or two lead acid batteries
or from an AC line voltage. When the unit operates from the AC line
voltage and batteries are installed, the batteries are charged. The unit
can be turned off and connected to AC line power to charge the
batteries.

4. Verify Proper Grounding

The fourth step requires you to insure that the monitor will be properly
grounded.

The V24/V26 MUST be grounded during operation. If a three-wire

receptacle is not available then a hospital electrician must be consulted
to ensure that proper grounding is available on installation. NEVER
attempt to use a three-wire to a two-wire adapter with the V24/V26.

If the V24/V26 is used in internal examinations on the heart or brain

ensure that the room incorporates an equipotential grounding system.

Warning

•Use only a three-wire receptacle that is properly grounded.

• When connecting a non-medical device such as a printer to the

RS-232 Interface of V24CT/V26CT, the monitor must be prop-
erly grounded, or the non-medical device properly isolated.
This must be done in order to prevent the possibility of an
electrical shock hazard (to the user and or patient) from
excessive ground leakage currents from the non-medical
device such as a printer, and to maintain compliance with IEC
60601-1-1 where applicable. This hazard is especially prevalent
when the V24CT/V26CT is operated in battery mode.

•In normal AC line operation grounding the monitor is accom-

plished by ensuring that the AC line cord is connected from the

Site Preparation Guidelines 3

monitor to a properly grounded AC receptacle. Alternatively
and additionally, proper grounding may be achieved by attach-
ing a safety grounded wire to the threaded safety ground stud
found on the rear of the monitor.

• Isolation may be achieved by powering the printer through a

safety isolation transformer.

• Use only the power cord supplied with the monitor.

5. Install a Philips monitoring network (SDN) branch and recepta-

cle

The monitor is only compatible with the Philips patient care system
network. The monitor’s connection to the Philips patient care system
network requires an available branch and receptacle. A Philips
monitoring network (SDN) cable must also be ordered. If the site needs
to be prepared for a network installation; namely, installation of a
System Communications Controller (SCC), branch cables, connectors,
and switch wall boxes, refer to the following documentation for
installation instructions:

Serial Distribution Network (SDN) 78581A System Communications

Controller (SCC) Service Manual, 78581-91909.

Contact your local Philips sales office if you need to add Philips
monitoring network (SDN) connectivity.

3. Install the parameter modules into the Plug-in Satellite Rack in

the order which suits your site needs.

4. Connect the power cord to the Mainframe.

5. If you are using the V24CT/V26CT, install the batteries.

6. Plug the power cord into an AC power outlet.

Note—If you have an M1026A Anesthetic Gas Module (AGM), do

not daisy-chain the AC power through the AGM. This
configuration may degrade RFI performance.
7. If option J13 (RS232) was ordered, connect the appropriate cable
to the 9-pin connector at the rear of the monitor and to the device
(AGM, local printer, or computer). In most cases, the M1204-
60192 Printer Cable will be used, for example, AGM, local printer
or MECIF computer connection.

8. To filter radiated emissions, a core shielding bead (P/N 9170-

1521) must be attached to the defibrillator synchronization cable
when a defibrillator is connected to the monitor. This filter has
no impact on the function of the monitor. To attach the core
shielding bead:

a. Open the core shielding bead (filter).

b. Place the bead around the defib sync cable as close to the
jack as possible.
c. Close the bead over the cable and snap shut.
d. Plug the cable into the monitor's defib sync port. The bead
should be at the monitor end of the cable.

Charging the Lead Acid Batteries

Use only batteries provided by Philips Medical Systems specifically

intended for use with the V24CT/V26CT. Use of other batteries could
damage your unit.

Before using the V24CT/V26CT for the first time, you must fully charge
the batteries. Since the batteries may have been on shelf for an
extended period, charging exercises the batteries and also prevents
overdischarging the batteries. To charge the batteries, install the
batteries.and connect the AC power cord to the M1205A and plug it
into an AC power source. DO NOT turn the unit on. Verify that the AC
Power LED is on and the display is blank. The Battery Charging and
Battery Charged LEDs should behave as follows during the charging
routine:

Residual Capacity Charging LED Charged LED

Up to 40% Flashing Off

More than 40%, Less than Steady Off

90%

More than 90% Steady Steady

Full Off Steady

18 Installing the Monitor Components

When the monitor is plugged in and the power is off, it takes
approximately four hours for the batteries to reach a charge of 90%
capacity and nine hours for the batteries to be fully charged. If the
monitor is plugged in and the power is on, it takes approximately 16
hours to charge the batteries.

Batteries may also be charged using the 1278A External Battery

Charger which charges up to four batteries simultaneously. The
average charge time for a battery in the M1278A is 2.5 hours.

needs to interact with the equipment. When you
Install the monitor power up the monitor, you want the monitor to be
already pre-configured and ready for use for the majority
Configure the monitor of patients in that unit. For example, you can determine
in advance what high and low alarm settings should
appear, what sequence of waves should be displayed, or
which ECG lead(s) should appear on the screen. The
nurse can easily customize the monitor’s settings for
individual patient needs. Instructions for changing
settings are found in the User’s Guides. What is described
in this chapter is how to dictate what settings will
initially appear when the monitor is powered on. As
shown in the table below, you can configure the monitor

Definitions to Key Configuration Terms

Active Configuration -- An active configuration is the one (of the

four available) that has been chosen and is currently being used.

Configuration Set -- You do not have to spend time setting all

available configurations because the monitor has been shipped to you
already configured. There are four pre-configured Configuration Sets
available that allow selection of the following patient types/
environments: ADULT ICU, ADULT OR, NEONATE ICU, and
NEONATE OR.

Changing Configuration Sets-- Allows you to change the way the

monitor processes patient parameters. Examples include: individual
alarm limits, assessing a pre-selected set of monitoring choices to
accommodate different patient’s ages (adult or neo) and monitoring
environments (ICU or OR). Note that changing to a new configuration
set changes how the monitor processes patient signals and default
alarm limits, and all previous patient data is lost when you change
between configuration sets.

Channels #1 through #4 or #6 -- The channels show up to 4 waves

on the screen (6 waves if option C06 is present). Each channel may be
configured to display a specified waveform, such as ECG, Pressure,
etc.

Note—Except in the case of Delete 4th Wave option, where the

channels show up to 3 waves.

Factory Defaults -- The monitor is shipped to you already configured

with factory default settings that are based on patient environment and
category. The Factory Defaults softkey allows you to recall the factory
defaults when making changes to the monitor.

Global Switches -- This part of the Configuration Set is used to store

patient/environment combination information as well as the line
frequency.

Latched and Unlatched Alarms -- A latched alarm will continue to

sound and flash until a clinician resets it. An alarm that is unlatched
will stop audibly alarming if the patient’s heart rate, or other
parameter, returns within the high/low alarm range.

24
Operating Modes -- The monitor may operate in one of four operating
modes:

• Configuration Mode is the operating environment in which you

enter configuration choices on how you want the monitor to
work when it is on.

• Monitoring Mode is the operating environment used to actively

monitor a patient.

• Service Mode is used when troubleshooting your monitor,

checking errors in status log, running display tests, etc.

• Demo Mode is used to display simulated waves, parameters and

trended information.
Patient Category -- Refers to Adult, Pediatric, or Neonate patient
categories. From any configuration set (i.e. Adult ICU), by changing
Patient Category you can change the way the monitor processes
patient signals for different aged patients. Unlike changing
configuration sets, trended patient data and current alarm settings will
not be changed or lost when you only change Patient Categories. When
Patient Category is changed, this affects the way the patient parameter
data is processed. For example, the processing algorithm for ECG is
different for Adults and Neonates.

Screens A, B, C, D and E -- The monitor may be configured to display

three different screen layouts. For instance, Screen A may be
configured to display three waves of ECG and Pressure, while Screen
B may be configured to display only one ECG wave and Respiration.

Customers can use preconfigured screen labels or select the User

Defined key in Configuration mode and specify screen labels of their
choice.

Unit Type -- Unit Type includes ICU and OR and is displayed during
configuration to remind you which environment the Configuration Set
is to be used. Certain parameter settings, such as the ECG bandwidth,
will usually be different in the ICU or OR environment.

Universal Set -- Allows you to configure the monitor in a consistent

presentation of patient information for all configuration sets. There are
settings that are always shown such as waveform colors, the way the
recorder operates, and how data is accumulated and displayed. These
settings are used regardless of which configuration set is being used to
monitor a patient. These choices are made once and apply to all
configuration sets.

25
Procedure Overview

The following provides 12 of the most frequently used procedures for

configuring the monitor. For step-by-step instructions, refer to
the procedures beginning on the following pages or see page
references below to find instructions for each task. If you need to
make additional changes, refer to Appendix A Configuration Checklist
which provides tables of all task windows and factory default settings.

limit settings.

Example A: Selecting ECG Lead on Channels 1 or 2

You may have to change the monitor to display anywhere from 1 to 3

channels of ECG. For instance, a monitor displaying 1 channel of ECG
is frequently used in a Neonatal intensive care unit. In a cardiac
intensive care unit, two or three ECG leads will often be used.
Additional ECG leads are used based on the condition of the patient
and the kinds of procedures that are being delivered to the patient.

The selection of which ECG leads are displayed is another

consideration when configuring the monitor. In a post PTCA unit
where a patient has had balloon angioplasty it is often standard
procedure to look at more than one ECG lead. Three or four ECG leads
allows the clinician to monitor the patient’s response to the treatment.
Selection of which leads to use is based on which coronary artery is
actually diseased. Therefore, a clinician will want to monitor very
specific views of the heart based on what they know about the
patient’s coronary status. Unit protocols may dictate which ECG leads
should be defaulted for initial monitoring.

Example B: Changing Respiration High Limits and Apnea Times

Respiration rates are different between patients of different ages.

Therefore, the safe range from where you can set a high respiration
rate limit is also different.

Apnea time is another consideration based on who is being monitored.

Neonates have immature neurological systems and as a result, have
very irregular breathing patterns. Adults typically have much more
stable breathing patterns. Elderly patients may have very irregular
breathing patterns. Again, you may need to change the monitor’s
Apnea Time based on the patient being monitored.

Unit protocols may dictate not only the high respiration alarm limit,
but the length of time chosen to define an apnea red level alarm for this
unit.

A clinician will have to interact with the monitor less often if items
such as Pressure Labels and Scales have already been configured into
the monitor. Depending on the type of focused care clinicians are
providing, you want to have a standard set of pressures to appear on
the screen.

Procedure for Changing Pressure Labels and Scales

Note—There are three different factory defaults for pressure.

Pressures (1), (2), and (3) have differing factory default values. To
change the factory default values, repeat the following procedure for
each pressure module.

Example D: Changing SpO2/Pleth tone modulation

Tone modulation is varying tone based on SpO2 value. Setting tone

modulation to Enhanced will cause a greater variation in sound than
setting it to Standard.

In general, clinicians do not want to add to the noise in an adult or

neonatal ICU. SpO2 tone modulation may be turned off in such a
situation. However, hospitals most often require that tone modulation
be turned on in an operating room environment. Tone modulation may
also be used in a step down environment where patients are isolated in
rooms and who may be ventilator dependent. Under these different
circumstances, you can pre-configure the monitor so that tone
modulation is set to off, standard, or enhanced.

Example E: Changing tcpO2/tcpCO2 transducer site time

Site time for a tcpO2/tcpCO2 transducer is a skin integrity issue for a

neonate ICU. A neonates skin may burn if the transducer is left on the
skin for an extended period of time. There are different standard
procedures on how often clinicians should change the site of the
transducer. You may have to change the site time factory default
setting, which is 4 hours, if your hospital’s site time varies from this
setting.

Step 6. Change Alarms Settings

Changing the Alarms settings allows you to determine how alarms will
respond to a variety of patient conditions. The monitor is
preconfigured to make an audible tone and display a blinking numeric
whenever patient conditions warrant an alarm. Visual and audible
alarms may be latched or unlatched.

Example: Changing alarm tone volume and alarm suspend

settings

For patient safety, the monitor has pre-configured alarm settings for
the level of alarm volume and how the patient monitor will operate if
the user selects Alarm Suspend. There are conditions where a user
for a care unit may suspend alarms to prevent unwanted alarms. When
a bedside-generated alarm sounds, the factory defaults it to a high
volume. The default for the volume of the prompt tone is low when a
user selects the alarm suspend key on the monitor.

In all configurations, factory defaults are for alarms to be suspended

for only 3 minutes. Although you could change this to 1 or 2 minutes or
infinite if required. For infinite, alarms are suspended indefinitely until
the user un-suspends them.

Step 7. Change Monitor Setup settings to your needs

Monitor Setup settings allow you to change a wide variety of monitor

features including:

• Configuration Sets which include Adult ICU, Adult OR,

Neonate ICU and Neonate OR pre-configured applications. Refer
to Table A-1.

• Global Switches which is used to combine and store

information including patient category (i.e adult, pediatric, and
neonate), unit type (ICU, OR) and line frequency. Refer to Table
A-41.

• Display Setup which controls the way the waveforms are is

presented. This includes the position of the wave and speeds, etc.
Refer to Table A-29, Table A-30, and Table A-31.

• Recordings settings allow you change up to 7 different types of

recordings including delayed/alarm recordings, oxyCRG
recording, and turn on, off or change alarm recordings. Refer to
Table A-36, Table A-25, and Table A-39 respectively.

• Date and Time which allows you to set the date and time for
monitors not connected to the Philips patient care system
network. Refer to ‘Power Up the Monitor and Set Date and
Time” on page 31.

• RS232 settings allow you to configure port #1 to an external

computer, local printer, or the AGM. Refer to Table A-40.

• Status log and Monitor Revision display is used for service

activities and identification of the hardware and software
revisions in your monitor.

• Operating Modes which allows you to switch from Monitoring

to Configuration Mode and from Configuration Mode back to
Monitoring Mode. Refer to ‘Go Into Configuration Mode” on
page 33 and ‘Switch to Monitoring Mode to Resume Monitoring”
on page 54.
Note—It is beyond the scope of this guide to provide you with a
detailed description of how to configure the monitor using all of the
above settings. However, the following are 3 examples of how you
may change the more frequently used Monitor Setup settings.
Additional examples of how to configure the monitor are provided
throughout this chapter In addition, you may identify the default

But what a clinician may want when the monitor is powered up is a

different wave for each channel. The monitor would have to be re-
configured to suit the clinician’s requirements each time the monitor is
powered up. Under these circumstances, you want to reconfigure the
screen to always display the same waves and numerics that are used in
a particular critical care unit, such as a coronary step down unit or
neonatal intensive care unit.

You want the most frequently used waveforms to initially appear when
the monitor is powered on in Screen A. That way, a minimal amount of

time is needed for set up. You can also pre-configure 4 additional
screen choices, identified as screens B, C, D and E. You can use Screen
A to show the most frequently used parameters and associated
waveforms. For example, Screen A can show 2 leads of ECG, one pleth
and one respiration waveform.

Later, you just change from Screen A to Screen B if you want to show 1
lead of ECG, a pressure line, pleth wave, and end tidal CO2 waveform.

Example B: Recording Red ECG Alarms Only

Changing alarm recordings is performed as a unit practice and

procedure. Depending on the severity of a patient’s illness, and what
your hospital’s standards are for treatment, the alarm recordings may
need to be changed from the factory default settings. For instance, the
standards for treatment under red alarms versus yellow alarms or
turning on or off alarm recordings may differ for each critical care unit.
Patients in an electrophysiology unit may have frequent arrhythmia.
Doctors and nurses treating a patient may only want to document
those arrhythmias that are going to be treated. There is no reason to
document every arrhythmia event and there is no reason to waste
recording paper. For this reason you may need to configure the
monitor so that it does not record every arrhythmia event.

Respiration alarm recordings should be configured to the patient

population. In a neonatal environment, a clinician will want to hear the
alarms and be alerted when a patient is apneic, not breathing.
However, a clinician may not require respiration alarms to
automatically record. There is much risk of having false alarms in a
neonatal population as neonates have immature nervous systems with
irregular breathing. Under these circumstances, you may want to turn
off recordings for both red and yellow level respiration alarms, but still

a. The following applies to Addendum 3 of the French norms:

The Alarm Suspend for a Philips monitoring network (SDN) networked environment must be set to 3 mins.
b. Visual alarms are latched and audible alarms are nonlatched. Central station acts on visual alarms only.
c. The following applies to Addendum 3 of the French norms:
The Lowend Al. tone is fixed to audible.
d. If Maintn Visual Al is set to “Yes”, all numerics for the active alarming parameters (or latched alarms) will continue to
blink, even if alarms are suspended or the individual alarm is switched off.

Note—Maintain Visual Alarms

If Maintn VisualAl is set to Yes, an alarm which has been silenced and then suspended, will remain silent even if
a monitor alarm is reactivated. To ensure that an alarm continues to sound after it has been silenced and
suspended, you must set the item Maintn VisualAl to No.
Note—Alarm Reminder

If the alarm reminder is configured to ``On'', an active silenced alarm will be re-announced (for 6 seconds) after
the configured Alarm Reminder Time (temporary acknowledgment).

If the alarm reminder is configured to ``Off'', an active silenced alarm will not be re-announced (indefinite
acknowledgment).

If the alarm reminder is configured to ``Re-Alarming'', an active silenced alarm will be re-announced after the
configured Alarm Reminder Time has passed. The alarm tone will sound continuously until it is silenced by
pressing the Silence/Reset key.
Note—French language V24/V26 only.

If French Homologation behavior is required, all settings are configurable in Service mode under “Global Switches”.

If conforming to these standards, the following alarm configurations must be selected:

Prompt tone volume (60 to 255 in steps of 15)

a. HR/Pulse alarm exceptions:

*The on/off alarm status for HR and Pulse, cannot be controlled through this configuration alone. The desired param-
eter must also be selected in the `HR/Pulse configuration task window'. Without this consistency the required alarm
will not be activated in monitoring mode.
* The above mentioned consistency must also be adhered to if the `HR Alarms On/Off' control has been `disabled'.
* If Arrhythmia is assigned, the HR alarm is automatically switched off and pulse is switched on. The original alarm
setting is preserved, and restored, as soon as arrhythmia is deactivated.
