and was Sandburg's first major volume of poetry. Despite those stumbling blocks, I found
Sandburg's poems to be beautifully written, especially for the common people. It begins with a list of
tumultuous occupations in the working class of Chicago.
And then one day I got a true look at the Poor, millions of the Poor, patient and toiling; more patient
than crags, tides, and stars; innumerable, patient as the darkness of night--and all broken, humble
ruins of nations. It provides enough shelter to people coming from all backgrounds and ultimately
moulds itself with its thriving population. Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young.
Those crazy and beautiful people, walking up and down the streets, as the Sears tower pierces the

to be way more like a man than like a city. It is the hand of God and the lack of fire escapes. But in a
