1 - Decimort/Low pass EQ , valhalla vintage reverb, waves H delay
● F
or soul sample vocals use this fx chain - 1. Harsh compressor / light distortion - make it
crunchy , 2. Plate reverb, 3. Subtle slap delay
3. EQ Tip
If you’re using piano as your main instrument, or any other instrument that has a lot of mid
frequencies, try EQing out the frequencies like this, it should make it a lot cleaner
lot of the time when you have a lot going on in your project, certain sounds are clashing,
A
there’s 2 easy and effective ways to get rid of the clashing or at least clean it up a bit. Panning,
and EQing.
When you have 2 sounds that sit in a similar frequency range, pan one left, and one right
lso for example, if you have a lead melody that has a lot of high end, on top of synth chords
A
that also have a lot of high end, find the loudest frequencies in the lead, and take your EQ and
put those frequencies down on the synth chords, to create space for the lead.
5. DISTORTION
on’t be scared to add some life and grit to your stuff, if your stuff sounds so clean and
d
cookie cutter it doesn’t stand out as much. Add some edginess , I been doing this
recently and it’s been a huge help, just don’t do too much, be tasteful.
Q first with a slight like 1-2b lift on the high end, and then the expander - default
E
setting, and adaptive limiter, default setting. - all stock logic plugins and this has been my
go to for 6 years or so now. Never misses.
Man fuck it, lil self promo, this$7 kitreally got some sauce you won’t regret trying it out
reates a different connection with your music, you’re not limited to what you can click, when
c
you are able to play its more free and you can come up with patterns you wouldn’t think to click
in
o grab you a sustain pedal and thank me later… your keys game will be way better. send me a
G
DM with a pic of you and your pedal lol, trust me its sauce. And cheap. Here’s one
10. Arrangement
If you want a complex loop or beat, make sure no one section has too many sounds,
instead create different sections that each are simple enough for someone to make a
beat on top of
rrangement! - ear catching section first that gives a full preview of what the loop sounds
A
like at its height, then transition into a section where it’s more empty that leaves room for
drums and an artist
- example - unfiltered vocal hook in intro -> filtered or no vocal for the next section
where a beat would drop and vocals would come in
e intentional with every sound, if you’re just adding it for no reason and can’t justify
B
what it adds to the melody or beat, it’s taking up space and doesn’t need to be there.
Don’t add stuff just to add it, add it as needed
11.The 1 1 1 4 Method
super good way to make repetitive and catchy melodies without them being toooooo repetitive
A
and boring, is to use what i call the 1 1 1 4 method. Essentially, the same exact thing plays 3
times in a row, then on the 4th time around, it switches up. This relieves the tension of the same
thing playing over and over, but keeps a repetitive theme that is easy to get caught in your head.
I’m not gonna bore you with the theory behind these, just know these progressions are some of
my GO to’s and if you mess with the midi a bit and change it up you can get soooo many loops
out of these same 5 progressions.
One of the EASIEST ways to spice up your progressions is to mess with inversions.
nd if you don’t know any music theory that word might sound scary, I promise it’s not, it’s very
A
easy….
ll you need to do is try putting notes up and down octaves in your chord progressions, for
A
example, like this:
If you start with the chords in their normal position, this G Note is on the bottom, but going from
the top note of the first chord to the 3rd chord is a big jump, so if you just put that G up an
octave(option, shift, up arrow for logic) now it is closer to the other top notes, and this makes it
sound different,
here’s no limit to this you can mess with the octaves of as many notes as you want till it
T
sounds fire
● H
