Basic Mathematics TEST-2

20-th of November 2020

Reasoning and justification are needed in the solutions..

1. a) (7 points) Determine the complex number z + w (we ask the result in algebraic form),
if:
(3 − i)5 (1 + i)(2 + i)(3 + i)
z= w=
(2 + i)4 (1 − i)(2 − i)(3 − i)
b) (4 points) Solve the equation z 3 − 3z 2 + 4z − 2 = 0 on the set of complex numbers.

2. Consider the polynomial f (x) := x2 + 2x − 3 (x ∈ R), the real parameter p ∈ R and the
following matrix:  
1 0 1

A := 0 p 0  ∈ R3×3 .
1 0 1
(a) (2 points) For which values of p ∈ R is the matrix A regular?
(b) (4 points) Compute f (A). For which values of p ∈ R is the matrix f (A) singular?
(c) (4 points) Determine the inverse of the matrix f (A) if p = 2.

3. (5 points) Determine whether the following subset is a subspace in R4 .

{ }
S := (x, y, z, u) ∈ R4 (x + y)2 − (x − y)2 = 3xy − 2z + u

4. Consider the following subspace in R4 :

{ }
W := (2x−y+3z−u, x−y+3u, −x−z, u+y+2z) ∈ R4 x, y, z, u ∈ R, 4x+3y−2z+u = 0

(a) (8 points) Determine a basis in W . Determine the dimension of W .

(b) (3 points) Determine whether the set G = Span((1, −5, 0, −1), (0, 0, 0, 0)) is a sub-
space of the vector space W or not.
(c) (2 points) Determine a basis in G. Determine the dimension of G.

5. (11 points)
a) Solve the following system of linear equations using the Elementary Basis Transforma-
tion (EBT) method. Write the solution in scalar form.
b) Write the solution in vector form too.
c) Determine the rank of the coefficient matrix.
d) Determine a basis and the dimension of the solution space of the associated homoge-
neous system.

3x1 − x2 − 2x3 + 2x4 + 4x5 = 1

5x1 − 2x2 + x3 + 4x4 + 7x5 = 4
x1 − x2 + 8x3 + 2x4 + 2x5 = 5
