Introduction
This Special Instruction describes the installation of the 468-4172 Engine Wiring Gp on certain 3512C Engines.
Before attempting the procedures documented in this Special Instruction, make sure that you have read and
understand the information in this document.

maintenance, or the repair procedures.
Operation of the machine and the maintenance of the machine must not occur unless the instructions and warnings
in the machines Operation and Maintenance Manual have been read and the instructions and the warnings are
understood.

Do not attempt to assemble this machine until you read and you
understand the assembly instructions.
Improper assembly procedures could result in injury or death.
Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel

working on the equipment.
To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from

the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of
the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with
other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.
Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform

personnel that the equipment is being worked on.
Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and
understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and
Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the
warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Cat dealer for
replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

Installation Procedure

Front end of engine
Plug (35) replaces unused oil temperature sensor.
1. Attach harness assembly (34) to the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
2. Install clip (14) at the top of the ECM using previous hardware. Use cable strap (30) to secure the harness
assembly to the clip.
a. Install clip (14) to the side of the ECM using bolt (4) with hard washer (16). Secure the harness
assembly to the clip using cable strap (30).
b. Install clip (12) at the bottom of the ECM using bolt (9), spacer (11), and hard washers (16). Secure
the harness assembly to the clip using cable strap (30).
Front end for engine
3. Install clips (14) using bolts (4) with hard washers (16) shown in the locations in Illustration 3. Secure the
harness assembly to the clips using cable straps (30).
a. Install clip (31) in the location shown using the previous hardware. Secure the harness assembly to the
clip using cable strap (30).
b. Install clip (13) in the location shown using the previous hardware. Secure the harness assembly to the
clip using cable strap (30).
Right side of engine
4. Install clips (14) at the corner of the valve cover bases as shown in Illustration 4 using the previously
installed hardware.
5. Install grommets (22) around the harness assembly. Install clips (19) and (20) around the grommets. Attach
the clips to the cylinder heads using spacers (29), bolts (5), and hard washers (16).
a. Install clip (26) using bolt (2) with hard washer (16).
b. Install clips (13) using bolts (7) with hard washers (16).
c. Install clip (31) using spacer (32), bolt (5), and hard washer (16).
d. Secure the harness assembly to the clips using cable straps (30) in the location shown in Illustration 4.
Right rear of engine
6. Install clip (31) using spacer (32), bolt (5), and hard washer (16).
a. Install clip (14) using spacer (24), bolt (3), and hard washer (16).
b. Install clip (14) using bolt (7) and hard washer (16) on top of the flywheel housing.
c. Install clip (13) using bolt (7) and hard washer (16) on the side of the flywheel housing.
d. Install clip (14) using bolt (7) and hard washer (16) on the side of the flywheel housing.
e. Install clip (13) using bolt (7) and hard washer (16) on the drain cover.
f. Install clip (13) using bolt (7) and hard washer (16) on the camshaft cover.
7. Install grommet (21) on the harness assembly in the location shown in Illustration 5. Install clips (17) and
(18) around the grommet. Secure the clips using spacer (29), bolt (5), and hard washer (16).
8. Secure the harness assembly to the installed clips using cable straps (30) in the locations shown in
Illustration 5.
Flywheel end of engine
9. Install grommets (21) around the harness assembly in the locations shown in Illustration 6.
a. Install clips (17) and (18) around the grommets in the locations shown in Illustration 6.
b. Secure the outside clips to the top of the flywheel housing using bolts (8) with hard washers (25).
10. Secure the middle two set of clips using brackets (33), bolts (6), nuts (10), and washers (23).
11. Install clips (14) on the side of the flywheel housing using bolts (7) with hard washers (16). Secure the
harness assembly to the clips using cable straps (30).
Left rear of engine
12. Install clips (14) at the corner of the valve cover bases behind the oil filter base. Secure the harness assembly
to the clips using cable straps (31).
13. Install clip (14) at the corner of the cylinder head using spacer (24), bolt (1), and hard washer (16). Secure
the harness assembly to the clips using cable straps (30).
14. Install clip (31) using the previously installed hardware. Secure the harness assembly to the clips using cable
straps (30).
15. Install grommets (15) in the locations shown in Illustration 7.
a. Install clips (26) and (27) around the grommets.
b. Secure the clips using bolts (5), hard washers (16), and spacers (29).
Left rear of engine
16. Install clip (13) using previously installed hardware. Secure the harness assembly using cable strap (30).
17. Install clips (14) at the corner of the valve cover bases. Secure the harness assembly using cable strap (30).
18. Install sleeves (28) around the harness assembly in the locations shown in Illustration 8.
a. Install clips (31) around the sleeves. Secure the clips to the cylinder head using bolts (7) with hard
washers (16). Secure the harness assembly using cable straps (30).
Left side of engine behind fuel filter base
19. Install clips (31) using previously installed hardware in the locations shown in Illustration 9. Secure the
harness assembly using cable straps (30).
