    Utilitarianism is an ethical philosophy that judges actions based on their consequences. It holds that an action is right if it maximizes happiness and minimizes unhappiness. There are two main branches: act utilitarianism which judges each act based on its consequences, and rule utilitarianism which judges acts based on whether they conform to rules that maximize utility. The founder was Jeremy Bentham, and John Stuart Mill further developed the theory holding that actions should bring the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.
