International migrations still are one of the main ways of expansion, contraction and

transformation of languages (Eschenhagen 2011). They have undergone very relevant


changes in its magnitude and courses. Migration from and towards Spanish language
areas of the world have also suffered remarkable changes. Social sciences have taken a
great interest in this recent global cycle of migration. In this article, some of the main
contributions of economy and sociology on linguistic dimension of migrations are
presented and commented, particularly those regarding and migration impact on
world position and value of Spanish language (Freitas, del Prette 2013, Mariano, Bolsoni-
Silva 2018). Firstly, main recent changes in international migration patterns are
described. Secondly, recent contributions from social sciences on the value of language
for immigrants are referred, specifically those regarding destinies selection and labour
market rewards (Abrahão, Elias 2021). And thirdly, some frequent ideological
assumptions are discussed, in particular about potential risks of immigrant is
bilingualism for political and cultural cohesion in host societies (Romero, Buschini et al.
2015).
