ATMIS trains Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit officers on child protection

Kismayo, 8 March 2024 -Thirty police officers from the African Union Transition Mission
in Somalia (ATMIS) have completed a five-day intensive training on how to protect
children in situations of armed conflict.

Organised by the ATMIS Protection, Human Rights, and Gender (PHRG) Division, the
training aimed to familiarise the officers from the Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit with
the broader objectives of the Mission and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) in
promoting the rights and welfare of children in conflict zones.

legal frameworks, because it is important to synchronize both the regional and global
instruments for the protection of children in situations of armed conflict,” said Gloria
Jaase, the ATMIS Senior Protection and Human Rights officer.

The training encompassed fundamental legal instruments such as the African Charter
on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. It also covered topics including Sexual and
Gender Based Violence (SGBV), gender mainstreaming and the involvement of youth
in peace, and security.

“With all these instruments being unpacked and explained to participants, we are
confident that they will integrate this knowledge during the transition period to protect
children when conducting their operations,” emphasised Ms. Jaase.

SP Samuel Abu Bakarr Kargbo, the Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit Contingent
Commander, emphasised the significance of the training in creating a secure
environment for Somali children affected by armed conflict.

"This is a basic training course for the promotion and welfare of the rights of children
especially in armed conflict areas like Somalia. The participants have been equipped
with the requisite knowledge, and techniques to identify issues affecting children,” said
SP Kargbo.

He expressed satisfaction that the specialised training will enable the officers to
effectively support efforts by the Federal Government to protect the rights and welfare
of children.

During the training, participants and the trainers also engaged in discussion on the
impact of armed conflict on children, and the responsibilities of ATMIS police officers in
mitigating such threats.
