Hello there dear reader! I am Jacques cartier! I’m known to be
the first European to navigate the St. Lawrence River. One question you might have is why? Or how? Well, On March 19, 1534, I was assigned the mission of “undertaking the voyage of this kingdom to the New Lands to discover certain islands and countries where there are said to be great quantities of gold and other riches”. The following April 20, the navigator from Saint-Malo cast off with two ships and a crew of 61. But what did I do before this? Well I was born in 1491 in Saint-Malo, the port on the north-east coast of Brittany. I was a respectable mariner, and improved my social status in 1520 by marrying Mary Catherine des Granches, member of a leading aristocratic family. My good name in Saint-Malo is recognized by my frequent appearance in baptismal registers as godfather or witness. But what did I really do in New france? Well, I was the first European to navigate the St. Lawrence River, and my explorations of the river and the Atlantic coast of Canada, on three expeditions from 1534 to 1542, laid the basis for later French claims to North America. I am also credited with naming Canada. But what issues did I face? Well, there were many obstacles and difficulties during my explorations, as I sadly lost some of his men during my voyages, and also lost settlers to Indian attacks. The harsh winter season was another factor that was difficult for me to further explore the new lands. I really hope that I can explore more and help with the expansion of new france’s influence in Canada. For anyone that would like to explore or go to new france, expect some delays, some losses, but remember to keep a high chin and keep going!
