Sinopec Corporate Social Responsibility in Ghana-Construction of

Western Rural Road of Sinopec Main Camp (Asemda Access Road)

Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation is the main contractor constructing the
Ghana Early Gas Phase Infrastructure Project at Atuabo in the Western Region of Ghana.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight on Sinopec practices and its constructional
activities within this project in fulfilling its commitment to corporate social responsibility.

This project spans across the breath of eight different district assemblies MMDA’s (Municipal
Metropolitan District Assemblies). And interestingly, Sinopec has work across these entire
districts without any social or community conflict due to their social relationship with the district
and its constituent people.

Environmentally, Sinopec has a very robust and sustainable environmental practice or programs
to protect the environment from pollution from its main constructional activities. This has come
in both technical design and operational practices. Typical example of such environmental
friendly of technical design was the thrust boring and Horizontal directional drilling operation
which was done with the sole aim of protecting Ghana’s wet lands and rivers systems as well as
the roads systems.

operation across rivers Region

By this, Sinopec have cross not less than three major rivers (Amansure, Ebi, and Ankobra) and
seven major roads ( Kanbgele, Essiama, Tarkwa, Krisan, Eshem, AT 49 and Aboadzi) in the
country and its entire operational span( 111km onshore pipeline).

Socially, Sinopec have not just done the least but progress to constructing major access roads to
some fringed communities outside their scope of project. The typical example was the access
route from Anaji village leading to AT30 (Block Valve station 1) and to the nearest village after
the BLK V1 to allow easy access from the community to the nearest town.
Distinctively, was the construction of the Western Rural Road of the main camp-ASEMDA
ACCESS road of about 1.4km, this happens to be the main commuting route for the people of
ASEMDA to the main road and its surrounding communities which was one their pressing and
aspiration needs to transport of their farming produce to the nearby cities and also avert some of
their problems. This conscious effort by Sinopec goes to deepen the relationship between the
Chinese expatriate and the villagers, and its international image in terms of corporate social
responsibilities. Sinopec as a company is just not profit oriented but socially responsible in
improving the living standards of its operational affected communities.

This western rural road of the main camp covers a span of 1.4km with nine (9) culverts along;
however, about 830m of the access road was in deplorable state which could take a vehicle about
20 to 30 minutes to the main road instead of 5minutes, the road is approximately 5m width and
almost 1300cubic meters gravel was used during the construction as in figure below.
Currently, Sinopec is reinforcing the Kasaworudu Bridge leading to Manpon Camp as part of its
corporate social responsibilities. This conscious effort b y company goes to deepen its mutual
relation to all the villages used as an access road to the project site and its local image in terms of
corporate social responsibilities.

The last but not the least, Sinopec have engage the local people in all aspects of its operation as
part of fulfilling the local content policy of Ghana. Sinopec is not just topping by the above
mentioned measures, but continually strive to improve its operations, measures and promote
harmony in all spheres of their operational spans (towns, regions and country at large).
