Question 1
(i) Express y = x2 – 4x + 7 in the form (x – a)2 + b, hence, write down the coordinates of the minimum
point on the curve. (3 marks)
(ii) Find the two values of m for which the line y = mx – 3m is a tangent to the curve y = x2 – 4x + 7.
For each value of m, find the coordinates of the point where the line touches the curve. (7 marks)
Question 2
A line has equation y = cx + 4 and a curve has equation y = 2x2 + 4x + 3c, where c is a constant.
(i) Find the set of values of c where the line will intersect the curve at two points. (3 marks)
Given that c = 1.5 and the line will intersect the curve at two points, P and Q.
(ii) Find the distance PQ and the coordinates of the mid-point of PQ. (7 marks)
Question 3
(ii) Find f –1(x) and define the domain and range of f –1(x). (5 marks)
Question 4
Point P cuts of y–axis at y = 2 and the coordinates of R are (8, 6). The mid-point of PR is M and the
perpendicular bisector of PR cuts the x–axis at Q.
(iii) Given that PQRS is a square, find the coordinates of S and the length of PS. (3 marks)
Question 5
The above diagram presented three points P(3, 15), Q(12, 6) and R(8, 3). The point S lies on the line PQ,
and RS is perpendicular to PQ.
(i) By showing detailed calculation, find the coordinates of S. (6 marks)
𝑃𝑆 (4 marks)
(ii) Calculate the ratio of 𝑆𝑄
.
