prologue lImagine a desert battlefield where two great armies of the Middle
East are about to be involved in the deadliest bloodshed in the Arab world. The
land of two great rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, is about to be soaked with a
blood bath. The desolate dunes of deserts are going to witness the unforgettable
war tyranny of history. A place where the air was shattered by artillery and
shells firing continuously. The sands of the desert were soaked with blood and
there was a traumatizing aroma of death all around. Now envisage the shocking
fallouts of this war on those experiencing this outburst. Amidst all this, the
life of a young girl in Iran was terror-stricken due to the horrible upshots of
the war which was ongoing in its full rage. During this tumultuous period, a
girl named Maryam Mirzakhani was thinking of her nation, unlike her peers
whose thought process was about just surviving. Although she was living a
peaceful life, however, there was a storm inside her, a storm that would ruin all
the stereotypical barriers of an ultra-conservative society. Her peaceful life was
calm before a storm, which later proved correct by her unparalleled contribu-
tion to mathematics. In her childhood, she wanted to become a writer; a writer
who writes about the tyranny of war that she had experienced during her up-
bringing however, the intuitive sensation for mathematics propelled her to look
at Maths problems as a puzzle and then figure out how to solve these riddles.
In that way, she tackled the complex mathematical problem. The journey of
Maryam Mirzakhani was a tapestry of brilliance, perseverance, and a passion
that knew no bounds. Her journey can be traced back to the radiant classrooms
of Tehran to the scholastic halls of Harvard where she navigated the intricate
pathways of Riemann surfaces, hyperbolic geometry, and billiards in polygons.
Each theorem she had proved, each equation she had untangled, brought her
closer to the yearning for recognition. The mathematical world was amazed at
her insights into the complexities of mathematics, the way she resolved complex
mathematical paradoxes, played with the numbers, and whispered secrets to
the equations, revealing the hidden beauty of the universe. As she stood there,
in that room filled with anticipation, Maryam knew that the journey was not
just about the destination. It was about the love for numbers, the passion for
theorems, and the belief that in the entanglement of mathematics, she was un-
covering the mysteries of existence itself. Maryam had defied conventions and
rewritten the narrative of mathematical excellence; a narrative which was once
that only males are intellectually rigorous enough to win a field medal. Then
an invincible female arises from the conservative society of Iran by breaking
all the stereotypes and barriers proving that nature has given everyone equal
potential, whether you are a guy or a girl, rich or poor, pretty or ugly, if you
are competitive then sky is the limit for you. She remained unstoppable when
it came to challenge herself. During her teenage, she won the Mathematical
Olympiad in 1994 and again in 1995 by breaking her own record and wav-
ing her country’s flag high in an international mathematics competition. And
then came a moment that Maryam awaited for a long, it’s the day when she
was nominated as a field medal participant by the International Conference of
Mathematics. Maryam is about to make history in front of brilliant minds. As
Maryam approached the stage, there was a paradigm shift which is about to
unfold. The male dominance on the medal is about to shatter. As Maryam’s
hand reached for the medal, the room itself seemed to hold its breath. The
medal, forged in the crucible of achievement, felt weightier than its physical
form. It carried not just the legacy of mathematical prowess but the weight of
shattered norms; norms that remained unchallenged for the past eighty years.
As the medal adorned Maryam’s chest, it was as if the very laws of mathematics
stood still to witness the transformation, the mathematics arena is now opened
into an infinite expanse of possibilities. Everyone acclaimed her success and no-

the regressive intellectual abilities of females remained unchallenged. As this

misconception remained for centuries even females started to consider them-
selves as an alien to mathematics and its beautiful side which hides an entire
universe within it’s apparent complexity. Amidst the all-boys mathematics sym-
phony of Persia; history witnessed an agile girl who broke all the stereotypes
and emerged as a successful mathematician whose unparalleled success story in
the field of mathematics stunned everyone especially the advocates of Maths as
only for boys. Maryam defied the notion that mathematics was a realm reserved
for men. Her journey, unlike those of her peers, was marked by an insatiable
hunger for knowledge, a hunger that knew no gendered boundaries. In the
numerical heart of Persia; Maryam Mirzakhani shattered all the expectations
about her becoming an ordinary girl; a girl whose only destiny is to work un-
der the surveillance of her male guardian, a girl whose only task is to become a
conformist to those false believes which had set-up and to never challenged com-
mon practices in the society. Breaking all the stereotypes and barriers Maryam
Mirzakhani emerged as a revolutionary figure; a revolution that shattered all
the misconceptions associated with the specific gender. She arises not just as a
non-conformist but as a beacon of hope for thousands of girls to follow in her
footsteps. A torch-bearer which not only streamline the direction for thousands
of girls living in Iran but also becomes an embodiment of hope for the millions
of females across the globe. In the corridor of academia, where the echoes of
exclusion long resonated, Maryam’s rise opens up the limitless potential for an
aspiring mathematician, regardless of gender. Her journey from Tehran to Har-
vard was not just a milestone she achieved but was a reflection of excellence and
a gateway to the aspirants to come. Her story was not just about the elegance
of theorems but about breaking barriers, dismantling stereotypes, and proving
that brilliance knows no gender. As Maryam was awarded the field medal; she
was not the first Muslim to achieve such an immense scientific glory however first
ever female to break the streak of all-male field medalists’ narrative. And then
appreciation came from Tehran to Tokyo, from New York to Nairobi, and from
Islamabad to Istanbul. Her legacy resonated with aspiring mathematicians as
a source of motivation to embark on a journey that earlier was a nightmare for
them due to societal pressures and the prejudice associated with their gender.
For a common observer, she was just like other mathematicians whose lives are
about equations and proofs but actually, she was an entirely different human
being. A brave girl who was not only doing wonderful mathematics, she was
also struggling with the prejudice attached to her personality for being a girl.
She won both battles; her mathematical wonder stunned the aura of mathe-
matics and she battled with society to break the stereotypes was the work of
a talented girl who was aware of how to live in this world. Now, when every-
one recognizes Maryam for her Mathematical marvels and the way she dealt
with the proofs and theorems; it is the time when there is an acute need for
understanding from her life struggle. For Maryam Mathematics was like love;
a love for numbers, equations proofs, and theorems but there was a tiresome
struggle she had to possess to achieve her love. These struggles were the hard-
ships she bestowed upon but she was not an ordinary girl who was scared from

the unprecedented events. She fought and that fight continues till her untimely
death. Although, Maryam left us quite soon her contribution in the form of
her marvelous mathematics and as a humble and invincible human being has
numerous lessons. Let’s not forget the lessons Maryam Mirzakhani had left for
us. The lessons are about humanity; lessons that do not discriminate based on
your social orientation, gender, or religion. . .
