Will Sheila really continue to change or will she

conform to her parents wishes? (40 credits)

It’s evident that Sheila will to continue to change and progress since she’s already
been exposed to the cruel reality of the world and what prejudice others face. Since
Shelia has understood her privilege, Shelia will most likely clash with her
conservative parents and won’t conform to their expectations and standards. We
know she’ll most likely grow from this event since she was the most remorseful
throughout the play and continuously lectured her parents showing how at the start
she was infantilised by her parents who purposely sheltered her from the cruel
world which made her extremely naive. When hearing the awful news of how a
pregnant destitute young woman committed suicide she expressed how horrific it
was and was the most enthusiastic to confess to her wrongdoing and throughout the
play she was showed to continuously whimper. Her political ideology also aligns
with the socialist beliefs of the Inspector since she agrees with him time and time
again.

Why does Edna (the only working class female on

stage) say so little? (20 credits)
The reason Edna says so little and acts subservient is because she’s working class
and female. During this time, different classes had different roles and were
expected to act according to their class. Working class were expected to work and
serve their superiors while the Middle and Upper class were expected to be very
moral and continue the divide . Also, because Edna is a Working class and female
she was given unfair treatment and little opportunity. Edna has no kind of privilege
and she’s from a lesser background compared to the Birling family and because
she’s a female. According to your gender and class you had to follow certain
etiquette and perform set roles that you couldn’t change. Your destiny was chosen
for you. For the working class females they had no rights and were looked down
due to their low status. The reason she speaks so little is because she’s following the
etiquette of the time. Something the working class and women both had in common
was they had to serve their superiors. Women had to serve men and working class
had to serve the higher classes.
