The Church Slavonic hymns in the following pages are presented in a variation of
the Latin alphabet used with English, rather than in the original Cyrillic alphabet.
Certain additional symbols are added to indicate the correct pronunciation. The
system used here is one commonly employed in our prayer books. The short
explanation below is from Father Andrew Sokol’s Plain Chant.
The following letters vary in pronunciation from their equivalent in the English
language:

Č as ch in Church R is always trilled
CH as ch in loch Š as sh in show
D’ is a soft, “hushed” sound T’ is a soft, “hushed” sound
J as y in yet Ž as s in pleasure
L’ is a soft, “hushed” sound
Accented vowels are marked in order to assist in pronunciation, but may not be
strongly accented when sung.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Svjatýj Bóže, svjatýj Kripkíj,

On certain days associated with Holy Baptism, we sing the following in place of “Holy
God”:
