Understanding Learning Outcomes vs Objectives

The document discusses the importance of learning outcomes in education, emphasizing that they extend beyond grades to encompass the skills and knowledge a learner should acquire. It highlights the New Education Policy (NEP 2020) which promotes student-centric education and the need for learning outcomes to be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound). Additionally, it differentiates between learning objectives, which outline the goals of teaching, and learning outcomes, which reflect what students actually achieve through their learning experiences.

“One learns from books and examples only that certain things can be done.

Actual
learning requires that you do those things."
 This quote reflects that learning is a lifelong process. Agree?
 Likewise, the learning outcomes - the result or impact of learning can't be confined to
grades or marks obtained by learners in exams.

 A learning outcome is what the learner should be able to do/perform as a result of some
learning experience.

 In the context of formal education- it refers to what students should be able to do at the end
of a program/ course/ instructional unit.

 In a broader perspective- it's the amalgamation of a learner's knowledge, skill set, and
the ability to leverage them in real-time situations.

 Clearly, the concept of learning outcomes extends beyond the "knowledge" attained
by students in academics.
 This is why - New Education Policy (NEP 2020) has emphasized defining & achieving the
best learning outcomes by encouraging institutions to offer "student-centric" education.

 The learning outcomes must be "SMART" & clearly defined in terms of attainability!
 S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Attainable, R-Realistic, T-Time bounded

 Learning outcomes are formal statements that tell us what a student is able to do after
learning a given topic/concept.
 The learning described in outcomes should encompass the essential and significant
knowledge and skills students should develop in a course.
 Students should generalize their learning and integrate it with other areas of their lives
outside school.
 Learning Objectives are statements that define the expected goal(s) of an educational
activity.
 It describes intended state of a teacher i.e., what you as a teacher hope your students
learn.
 Objectives are used to organize specific topics or individual learning activities to
achieve the overall learning outcome.

 Learning objective: Why the teacher is creating a learning activity.

 Learning outcome: What the learner will gain from the learning activity.

 Learning objective serves as a map of the actions we will need to achieve the goals of the
course. If OBJECTIVES are what an instructor puts into the course and plans for achieving
the course goals,
 the LEARNING OUTCOMES are what learners actually produce or exhibit as a result of the
activity. They explain what students will be able to do because of the instruction, analysis,
or discussion.
 OBJECTIVES are what is intended while LEARNING OUTCOMES are what is actually
achieved.
