MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT #2

The Site of the First Mass

If you are given a chance to judge where the site of the First Mass in the Philippines happened, what
would you conclude based on the evidences presented?

If I am given a chance to judge where the First Mass in the Philippines happened I will also stand
affirm with the Limawasa, Southern Leyte. According to Albo’s account, an eyewitness, he said that
Magellan planted a cross upon mountain top where three islands could be seen to the west and southwest
and it best describes the geographical description of Limasawa. And although there’s a missing point
here, because it was said that Albo didn’t stated whether the land where Magellan put the cross was also
where the first massed was held, in my opinion, why would Magellan plant that cross if wasn’t for a very
significant event? I mean, planting a cross would be a sign of successful promulgation of Catholicism,
which could be indicated through a mass. And also with what was said last time that during the first mass,
two chieftains attended the mass, Rajah of Mazaua and Rajah of Butuan, which could be concluded that if
it took place in Butuan, Pigafetta would rather say the First Mass happened in the island of Butuan not in
island of Mazaua.
