MYP Assessment Task Sheet

Subject: Grade:
Are all our futures electric? 10
Title: Deadline:
Circuits and Electromagnetism Criterion B - Feb
Word limit: 3500 words (not including works cited) Criterion C - March
ATL:
Creative-thinking skills: Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products or processes.

Description of the Task:

You will decide on an area of study and an appropriate research question (RQ) + aim to test experimentally in a
summative B and C assessment. This is an open study where you can choose an area within Concept 3 and 4 that
you would like to explore further and also an opportunity to challenge yourself intellectually if you so choose, in
preparation for a higher level (HL) study of physics next year.

The following simulations are all options for your exploration. The first three are connected directly to our concepts
within the unit and the last three are extensions that you can explore and then decide if you would like to use one
for your B and C summative work: we will discuss this in detail in class and I will provide specific guidance on how to
best evaluate and choose the best suited simulation for your area of study.

**If you would like to use a different simulation not listed here, you need to obtain teacher approval FIRST before
planning out an investigation.**

Aim
To investigate the factors involved in either the areas of circuits (Ohm’s Law), electromagnets (solenoid), or a focus
of specific aspects of magnetic fields.

Description
Use the investigation cycle to design and carry out a computer simulated investigation to address the aim and
consider one factor. Plan your investigation so that you can measure the effect for various values of your chosen
design factor continuously. 5x5 data collection is a minimum. Variability of the raw data resulting from your
simulation is quite important, so please choose carefully. This can be done as an independent piece of work.

Safety
Use the same safety considerations we have focused on this year as we are using computer simulations for our B
and C assessments.

You should ensure you cite all your reference in MLA format, see the linked resource below for guidance.
