the function.

Dx(sinx)=cosx
d/dy (sinx) =cosx
Motivation:
"Guess the Rule"
Direction: Answer the following questions, by guessing the rule in the box.
1. Let c be a constant. If f(x)=c, then f’(c) = 0. This can also be expressed as Dx(c)=0
2.Let n be real number. If f(x)= x, then f'(x)= nx .This can be expressed as Dx(x ).=nx
3.The derivative of a constant c multiplied by a function f is the same as the constant
multiplied by the derivative.
4.The derivative of the sum of a function f and a function g is the same as the sum of
the derivative of f and the derivative of g.
5.Let f(x) and g(x) be differentiable. Then ,Dx [f(x)g(x)= f(x) Dx[g(x)] +g(x)Dx[f(x)].

Sum rule Quotient

3. Developmental Activities
A. Activity
Direction: State if the following given is true or false.
1. The derivative of f(x)=5 is zero.
2. The derivative of f(x) = y⁵ is 5y⁴
3. The derivative of f(x)= 10z⁹ is 10z⁸
4. The derivative of f (x) = (2x+3)²⁰ is 40(2x+3)¹⁹
5.The derivative of f(x ) = 10 is 10.
B. Analysis
Discussion about the Basic Differentiation rules and exercises to be solved.
First rule is Constant rule.
Let c be a constant. If f(x)=c, then f’(c) = 0. This can also be expressed as Dx(c)=0
Example:
1. fx(5) 2. fx(10)
f'x (5)= 0 f'x(10)=0
Second, Power Rule . Let n be real number. If f(x)= x, then f'(x)= nx . This can be
expressed as Dx(x ). = nx. .
Example:
1. f(x)= x⁵ 2. f(x)=x¹⁰
f'(x) = 5x⁴ f'(x)= 10x⁹
Third, Constant Multiple Rule. The derivative of a constant c multiplied by a function f
is the same as the constant multiplied by the derivative.
Dx[cf(x)]= cDx[f(x)]
1. f(x)= 5x⁴ 2.. f(x)= 10x ⁹
f'(x) = 5(5x⁴) = 25x⁴ f'(x)= 10(10x ⁹)= 100x ⁹

Fourth, Sum Rule . The derivative of the sum of a function f and a function g is the
same as the sum of the derivative of f and the derivative of g.
Dx[f(x)+g(x)]= Dx[f(x)] + Dx[g(x)]
Example:
1. f(x)= 1/2x²+3x³+5x 2. f(x)= 3x ⁴+x ⁵
f'(x)= x+9x²+5 f'(x)= 12x³+5x⁴
Fifth, Product Rule. Let f(x) and g(x) be differentiable. Then ,Dx [f(x)g(x)= f(x)
Dx[g(x)] +g(x)Dx[f(x)].
Example:
1. f(x)= (3x+5)(x²-5) 2. f(x)= (2x-1)(3x+4)

f'(x) = (3x+5)Dx(x²-5)+(x²-5)Dx(3x+5) f'(x)= (2x-1 )Dx(3 x 2+4) +(3 x 2+4)Dx(2x-1)

= (3x+5)(2x)+(x²-5)(3) = (2x-1)(6x)+(3x²+4)(2)
= 6x²+10x+3x²-15 = 12x²-6x+6x²+8
= 9x²+10x-15 = 18x²-6x+8
Sixth, Quotient Rule. Let f(x)and g(x) be differentiable function. Then, Dx[ f(x)/g(x)]=
g(x)Dx[f(x)] - f(x)Dx[f(x)]/ g(x)²
Example:
3 x +5
1. f (x)= 2
x −5

' ( x 2−5 ) dx ( 3 x +5 )−( 3 x+5 ) dx (x 2−5)

f x= 2
( x 2−5 )
( x 2−5 ) ( 3 )−( 3 x +5 ) (2 x)
¿ 2
( x 2−5 )

3 x −15−6 x + 10 x
¿ 2
( x 2−5 )
2
−3 x −10 X−15
¿ 2
( x 2−5 )

3 x −1
2. f (x)=
2 x +3

( 2 x+ 3 ) dx ( 3 x 2−1 ) −( 3 x2 −1 ) dx (2 x +3)
f ' x=
( 2 x +3 )2

( 2 x +3 ) ( 6 x )−(3 x 2−1)(2)
¿
(2 x +3 )2

( 12 x 2 +18 x )−(6 x2 −2)

¿
( 2 x +3 )2
2
6 x +18 x +2
¿
( 2 x +3 )2
