Components of Cultural Multiplicity

Irish Eyanga Bileka

About this course

I have always been interested in this theme and now I

have had the opportunity to read and know more about
it and to discuss several topics with my classmates. As a
result, I have learned a lot of concepts related to
cultural multiplicity, being a reflective exercise for
exchanging views and gaining knowledge about them.
Topics that have
broadened my
perspective
Globalization
Multicultural Education
Awareness of Cultural Diversity
Globalization
Ø Overprotecting minority groups may lead to bigger inequalities
(incites individuals to identify themselves as disadvantaged or
underprivileged)
Ø This sense of not belonging may result in minorities rejecting
integration, stablishing parallel communities that coexist in a
multicultural society
Ø Respect, empathy and equity are crucial elements to address
inclusion between all members of a social community
Multicultural education
Ø Children are like ‘blank canvas’
Ø Giving them an education that contemplates multiculturalism
enriches their knowledge and values and encourages them to be
more tolerant and respectful towards other cultures
Ø The role of teachers, as educators, and ours, as members of a
social community, must be an example for children to follow
Awareness of cultural diversity

Ø Traditions may be seen as an obstacle to progress

Ø Cultural heritage transmits ancient cultural essences shared
from one generation to another (collective identity), having an
impact on individual identities
Ø Globalization entails progress, advancement. However, it
should be taken into consideration that our identity is shaped
by past, present and future
Conclusions
ü Multiculturalism facilitates dialogues between cultures
ü Cultural multiplicity promotes understanding among
people of different origins, traditions, religions and political
systems
ü Knowledge, understanding and respect are key elements to
develop a global society in harmony

Strength lies in
differences, not in
similarities ”
