Lighthouse Biology - Cells and Tissues SNC2D - PVSS

Important note - to do this lighthouse, you will have to complete the Online Microscope
Drawing Activity. It will be key in understanding how to label and look at structures of cells.

This Activity!!!!!

Part 1: Cell division

Instructions:
1) Go to Microscope and click the “explore” button on the bottom.
2) Click on the “?” that is on the slide box and choose the “animal slides”. Choose one
of the following slides (whitefish prophase, whitefish metaphase, whitefish
anaphase, whitefish telophase/cytokinesis)
3) Use your microscope skills to focus the field of view on a cell that shows the stage of
mitosis you have chosen and complete the following:

You will then need to complete the following placemat for your stage of mitosis. It is only a
suggested format for the placemat. You can change the style if you like. It will include the
information as listed below:

● A picture of the cell from the microscope

● A biological drawing of a cell of your choice
● Cell/Nuclear membrane info: Are there any changes to the cell membrane? Are
there any changes (or is there) a nuclear membrane (comment as to why)?
● Important organelles: What organelles are important and involved in this stage?
How/Why?
● Genetic Information: The genetic information, what form is it in (Single Stranded,
Double Stranded, Chromosomes, Chromatin)? Explain how you know and why this is
important for this stage.
Part 2: Division Gone Wrong

Most of the time, cells divide without any issue. They make perfect copies of themselves,
and live out life without any issue. Sometimes, due to environmental, genetic, or just
random factors, cells do not copy properly, or develop the way they need to. If this happens
to a single cell, it does not impact us, but when it happens to a large enough number of
cells, ie: Tissues, it can cause certain disorders and diseases - they are linked directly to
the fact that the cell did not form properly, and thus does not work as it should.

In Part 2 of this lighthouse, you will be picking any one of the following disorders or
diseases, and answering some key questions about them. You are not limited to these
options, but please check in with the teacher first to make sure you will have a good
enough connection to use it.

Disorders and Diseases:

Cancer (be specific, find a certain type Anemia

such as skin cancer) Osteoporosis
Multiple Sclerosis Other (Check with the teacher first)
Muscular Dystrophy

Instructions:
1) Pick a disease or disorder!
2) Make two drawings.
● What the healthy cell or tissue looks like (that the disease is involved with)
● What the tissue/cell for the disease or disorder looks like
3) Answer the following Key Questions:
● What kind of cells are they?
● What are the symptoms of the disorder
● How does the structure of the cell (or tissue) lead (cause) the disorder?
● What steps and technology are involved in diagnosing the disorder or
disease?
● What steps and technology are involved in treating or managing the disorder
or disease (not everything is curable, often there are things we can do to
make it “better” or less worse)?
● What careers are involved in the process of researching, diagnosing and
treating this disorder? Provide some simple details like education, working
conditions (location, pay), etc.

You will most likely need to research this project. Make sure to keep a record of your
sources and notes, and submit them with your project.

You may complete this assignment using any format choice you like and it is due on
Wednesday November 15th
