THE CHLOROPLAST

Directions: Label the parts of the chloroplast based on the picture below and give a short description
of its function.

Example:

1. Chorophyll – a green pigment found in plants which is responsible for absorbing sunlight.

ANSWERS:

1. Outer membrane- contains pores and is therefore freely permeable to small molecules.

2. Thylakoid- pouch like sacs that are bound to a membrane in the chloroplasts

3. Stroma- internal space of the chloroplasts which encircle the grana and the thylakoids

4. Lumen- where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis take place.

5. Inner Membrane- Regulates the passage of materials in and out of the chloroplast

6. Granum- basic structural unit of the thylakoid membrane network of plant chloroplasts

7. Intermembrane Space- Transports ATP (energy molecule)
