Effects of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

on English for Science and Technology Major

Technology can transform the ways and the positions learning takes place, as well as the roles
played by students and educators in teaching performance (UNESCO, 2002a). Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) has a profound impact on education (Hussain, Suleman, Din, &
Shafique, 2017). The field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is affected by providing valuable
features, especially in virtual settings (Dashtestani & Stojković, 2015). Evaluating ICT's significance
in English for Science and Technology (EST) major to emphasize its studying impact, and its role in
enhancing language learning skills. Additionally, optimizing the utilization of ICT systems after
making the potential improvements.
As a student majoring in English for Science and Technology, my field of study focuses on
developing language proficiency in the context of scientific and technological subjects. The EST
major entails acquiring specialized vocabulary and understanding complex scientific concepts
(Mansouri, 2010). It also involves effectively communicating research findings and technical
information to both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
ICT systems are now a prerequisite for my EST major coursework. These systems' abundance of
tools and resources allows for more effective learning. Some useful ICT tools in digital libraries are
communication platforms, instructional websites, and online databases that facilitate interaction
between professors and students (The |Importance of ICT in Education|, n.d.). These technologies
enable students to perform indirect learning assignments, access current scientific material, and work
together (Gupta, 2023). It is extremely helpful for students to study the technique field of ESP.
The integration of ICT systems in studying EST has numerous benefits. Firstly, online databases
and digital libraries grant me access to a vast amount of scientific literature, allowing me to conduct
comprehensive research (Khan & Ahmed, 2013). By accessing these resources, I can stay updated
with the latest advancements in my field and enhance the quality and depth of my academic work.

Secondly, ICT systems provide interactive learning platforms that facilitate active engagement
and critical thinking (Buchanan & Lacey, 2019) (Paudel, 2023). The visual and interactive nature of
these tools fosters deeper understanding and retention of information (The |Importance of ICT in
Education|, n.d.). Online quizzes, simulations, and multimedia presentations enable me to grasp
complex scientific concepts more effectively.

Furthermore, ICT systems promote seamless collaboration and communication among students
and educators (Ukpe, 2023). Online discussion forums and video conferencing platforms enable me
to interact with peers and instructors, fostering a sense of community and creating opportunities for
exchanging ideas and seeking clarification (Aithal & Aithal, 2023) (Evroro & Okumoku-Evroro,
2014). This collaborative environment enhances my learning experience by promoting peer-to-peer
learning and exposing me to diverse perspectives.

While ICT systems have greatly enhanced the study of EST, there are areas for improvement.
Firstly, it is essential to ensure universal access to ICT infrastructure and resources to avoid creating
disparities among students (Striving for Universal Internet Access the Role of Communication
Infrastructure, 2023). Efforts should be made to bridge the digital divide and provide equal
opportunities for all learners, regardless of their socioeconomic background (Digital Inclusion:
Bridging the Technological Divide, 2023). This can lead to improved educational outcomes, as all
students have access to the necessary tools and resources for studying EST.

Secondly, incorporating more adaptive and personalized learning technologies within ICT
systems can cater to individual learning styles and needs. Adaptive learning platforms that adjust
content and pacing based on the learner's progress can optimize studying effectiveness (Costa, Tan,
Pivot, Zhang & Wang, 2021). This customization can help students learn at their own pace and
reinforce their understanding of challenging scientific concepts.

Additionally, ensuring the quality of content is crucial as not all online resources meet high
standards. It is important to carefully curate materials to guarantee their reliability and accuracy.
Moreover, cybersecurity concerns must be addressed with robust measures in order to safeguard
students' data and maintain the integrity of online learning environments (Ukpe, 2023). It’s necessary
for demonstrating a commitment to providing a high-quality and secure learning environment for
both students and teachers.
ICT has important role in EST field. Since its system utilization replaced information retrieval
methods, enhanced learning environments, and promoted interaction and communication, students
have investigated scientific concepts, participate in interactive education, and establish connections
with peers and professionals. However, efforts must be made to ensure equitable access, incorporate
adaptive learning technologies, and make a commitment to providing a high-quality and secure
learning environment. By embracing these changes, the EST sector can continue to grow and prosper
in the digital age.
