CMP 405 (INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE)

PROBLEMS WITH THE COMMON DEFINITON OF AI

”COOL THINGS COMPUTER CAN’T DO”:

It can’t be classified as a reasonable definition because it reduced the complex field to a vague notion of
just cool things that common computers can’t do. The term ‘cool” varies from person to person, it can
look basic to one person and advanced to another person. Furthermore, the performance of cool things
by computer systems does not justify the fact that it can replicate a human intelligence or is intelligent
in anyway.

“MACHINES IMITATING INTELLIGENT HUMAN BEHAVIOR. ”

This simplifies the concept to the bare minimum by stating that the main job or purpose of an ai is to
imitate a human being. It should include the ability to learn adapt, develop and even perform tasks
beyond human capabilities not limiting itself to the abilities of a human under the guise of imitation.

“AUTONOMOUS AND ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS.”

The problem with this definition is its specificity. Both terms are crucial attributes of an artificially
intelligent system. It overlooks the ability of a system to make decisions or learn and adapt.
Furthermore, a system can be autonomous and adaptive without being intelligent. If it doesn’t have
certain factors, it cannot be intelligent.
IMPROVED DEFINITONS
”COOL THINGS COMPUTER CAN’T DO”:

A better definition of Artificial intelligence would be the performance of tasks that require
human intelligence. Tasks like decision making, learning, development and the likes.

“MACHINES IMITATING INTELLIGENT HUMAN BEHAVIOR. ”

A better definition of artificial intelligence would be the development of computational systems

or algorithms capable of carrying out operations that would normally need human intelligence.
This include learning, reasoning, solving problems, comprehending spoken language, and
changing with the times.

“AUTONOMOUS AND ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS.”

The term artificial intelligence (AI) describes the creation of computer systems that are capable
of carrying out operations that normally require human intelligence, such as reading natural
language, picking up patterns, learning from experience, and making defensible conclusions.
