FOLKLORE: CULTURAL FOLKTALES

A folktale (also spelled folk tale) is a story or legend forming part of an oral tradition. Folktales are generally
passed down from one generation to another and often take on the characteristics of the time and place in
which they are told. Folktales speak to universal and timeless themes, and help folks make sense of their
existence or cope with the world in which they live.

→ The term was based on two words: Folk: which means people.
Lore: which means knowledge, to know.

Thus, the combination of the two words, means traditional knowledge of a people.

→ Some of the characteristics of folklore are:

Anonymous origin: Many have defined that an

element to be considered folkloric must have
anonymous origin, but this characteristic has been
questioned by scholars.

Oral transmission: The knowledge that is part of

the folklore of a people has to be transmitted orally.

Collective popularization: It has to become

popular in the culture of a people.

Spontaneous appearance: The elements of culture that form folklore appear spontaneously.
