If one of the fol owing conditions exists; (A) engine start failure, (B) unsta- bile idling or (C) poor acceleration, bagin by checking the following basic systems : 1. Its important to chock all, hamess connectors and verify that they are securaly con- nected. FL8 FUEL SYSTEM REMOVAL A\ caurion = When removing the ECM, it is necessary to remove the crash pad lower pane! before, $0 be careful not to scratch the crasd pad. + If the MiL(Maltunction Indicator Lamp) Is turned ON and any DTC is stored in ECM memory, verity the code with HI-SCAN and record It. + Disconnect the negative terminal of battery. Wnore Be careful not to scratch the crash pad. 1. Raise up the steering column. 2. Remove the door scar trim and cow! side trim. (Refer to "Interor Trim’) 3. Remove the cover of fuse box, 4, Loosen two mounting bolts and two screws 5. Disconnect the connector of DLC and the relief cable ‘of hood and remove the crash pad lower panel. 7. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure. INSPECTION ‘SERVICE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES IDLE SPEED Onore Before adjusting, check that the spark plugs, injectors, {le speed control actuator (ISC actuator), compres- ‘sion etc. are normal. CHECK CONDITIONS + Engine coolant temperature is 80 to 95°C (178 to 205°F} + Lights, electric cooling tan and all accessories are of + Transaxle isin neutral (‘Por "N* range for A/T vehi- les) + Steering wheel is ina straight forward positon (Vehi- cles with power steering). 1. Install a tachometer to the primary coil side or connect the scan tool to the data link connector. GENERAL 2. Start and run the engine at curb idle speed. 3. Run the engine for more than 5 seconds at an engine ‘speed of 2,000 to 3,000 rpm. Then, run the engine at Idle for 2 minutes. 4, Read the idling rpm. Idle speed : 700 = 100 rpm FUEL PUMP OPERATING CHECK 1. Turm the ignition switch OFF. 2. Apply battery voltage to the fuel pump drive connector to check that the pump operates. Dnore The fuel pump Is an in-tank type and its operation is hard to hear without comoving the fuel tank cap. ‘To reduce the internal pressure of the fuol lines and. hoses, first start the engine with the fuel pump discon- nected and wait unt it stops by itself, (Gore Be sure to reduce the fuel pressure before discon- necting the fuel main pipe and hose, otherwise tuol wil spill out. FUEL PRESSURE TEST 1. Fold the back of rear seat forward and then push up the folded rear sot forward. Then open the inspection panel ofthe fuel pump with screw driver. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal and then ‘connect the fuel pump harness connector. Using the fuel pressure gauge adapter (09353-24000, (09353-24100, 08953-38000), instal the fuel-pressure ‘gauge tothe fue! filter. Tighten the bol tothe specified torque. FL-10 Tightening Torque Fuel pressure gauge to fuel filter 25 ~ 35 Nm (250 ~ 350 kg:om, 18 ~ 26 lb-ft) 5. Connect the battery's negative (-) terminal. 6. Apply battery voltage to the terminal for the pump. drive and activate the fuel pump. Then, with fuel pres- ‘sure applied, check that there is no fuel leak trom the Pressure gauge or connections. FUEL SYSTEM 7. Start the engine and let it idle. 8. Measure the fuel pressure. ‘Standard value : 350 kPa (3.5 kg/om, 49.8 psi) 9. I the result of the measurements made in steps (7) and (8) are not within the standard value, use the table below to determine the probable cause, and make the necessary repairs. Replace the O-ring at the end of the hose. 14, Connect the fuet hose to the delivery pipe and tighten with the specified torque. 15. Check for fuel leaks. GENERAL FL-11 REPLACEMENT FUEL FILTER AND PUMP REPLACEMENT 1. Reduce the internal pressure of the fuel lines and hoses by completing the following operations. * After removing the rear soat cushion, disconnect the fuel pump hamess + Start the engine. Allow it to stop by itsel, then turn the ignition switch OFF. + Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal. + Connect the fuel pump harness connector. 2. Remove the eye bots while holding the fuel fter nuts securely, Q caution Cover the fuel filter with a shop towel to avoid residual gasoline trom splashing. 3, Remove the fuel fter mounting bolts, then remove the fuel filter from the fuel fiter clamp. 4. Atter replacing the fue! fiter, check for fuel leaks. OVERFILL LIMITER (TWO-WAY VALVE) REPLACEMENT 1. Disconnect the vapor hoses, and then remove the overfillimiter. “Two-way vavo 2. FL-12 FUEL SYSTEM MFI SYSTEM INSPECTION | cosrccooo If the MFI system components (sensors, ECM, injector, etc.) fal, interruption to the fuel supply or failure to sup- ply the proper amount of fuel for various engine operating Conaitions will result. The following situations may be en- countered. 1. Engine is hard to start or does not start at all 2. Unstable idle. 3. Poor driveability. MFI CONTROL SYSTEM INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR (IAT SENSOR) cicxme The intake air temperature sensor (IAT Sensor), built-in type in the MAP sensor, is a resistor-based sensor which detects the intako air temperature. According to the intake air temperature information from the sensor, the ECM will control the necessary amount of fuel injection. MFI CONTROL SYSTEM ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR (ECT SENSOR) swssier The engine coolant temperature sensor is located in the engine coolant passage of the cylinder head. It detects, the engine coolant temperature and relays signals to the ECM. Itemploys a thermistor which is sensitive to changes in temperature. The electric resistance of a thermistor de- creases in response to temperature rise. The ECM judges ‘engine coolant temperature by the sensor output voltage and provides optimum fuel enrichment when the engine is cold. SENSOR INSPECTION 1. Disconnect the throttle position sensor connector. 2, Measure the resistance between terminals 2 (sensor (ground) and terminal 3 (sensor power). ‘Standard value : 0.7 ~ 3.0 k2 3. Connect an analog ohmmeter between terminals 2 (sensor ground) and terminal 1 (sensor output). 4, Operate the throttlo valve slowly from the idle position, tothe fll open position, and check that he resistance ‘changes smoothly in proportion with the throttle valve ‘opening angle. 5.
