experiment date(s): Experiment 28 - Determination of Iron by Reaction with Permanganate - A Redox Titration Goal: To determine the % Fe” in an unknown sample by redox titration with potassium. permanganate. The reaction is: 5Fe”* + MnOy + 8H’ ——> SFe* + Mn™* + 4H,0. In this experiment we will start with the Fe”* sample dissolved in acid in a flask. The permanganate solution will be added via buret to the flask. Permanganate is purple in color, but becomes colorless when reduced to Mn’". The endpoint for the reaction has been reached when addition of 1 drop of permanganate to the iron sample turns the solution pink. This means there is no more Fe™* to react with the MnO¢. ex. A solid sample containing Fe”* weighs 0.962 g. It requires 32.32 mL of 0.0475 M KMn0, to titrate to the pink endpoint. What is the % Fe in the sample? (a) moles of MnO, used in the titration: 0.03232 L 1L 0.0475 mal = 1.54x 10? mol MnOy (b) moles of Fe”" in the sample: || S mol Fe = 7.70 x 10° mol Fe”* 1 mol MnOs (c) mass of Fe: 7.70 x 10° mol Fe” } 55.85 gFe]= 0.430 g Fe 1 mol Fe (d) % Fe in the sample: 0.430 ¢Fe_\x 100 = 44.7% Fe 0.962 g sample Procedure: (1) Omit sentence 1. (2) Weigh out three I-gram samples of the unknown. Record mass in "mass of sample". You will not need the first 4 blanks - through "mass after removing sample III" (3) 1 MH,S0, is already prepared. Omit the first sentence in the third paragraph. (4) omit optional section Page | of 2 experiment date(s): Waste Disposal: (1) Pour excess KMn0, into the specified container. (2) Dispose of all other chemicals into the ACIDIC INORGANIC waste container. ASA: omit last question Page 2 of 2
