Watch the episode, pay attention to the following expressions and try to get the meaning from the
context.

Answer the questions:

1. Are deeds selfless or selfish? Who do you agree with, Phoebe or Joey?

2. Give examples of good deeds.

Now discuss the following questions with a partner and take notes of your conclusions:

 How important do you think it is to give money to charity? Which charities are the most well-known?

 Do charities spend their money wisely or waste it on high salaries and costly advertising campaigns?

 Do charities really help the poor to become independent in the long term or do they simply make people
more dependent on charity?

 Do you think the rich have a duty to help the poor? Why? / Why not?

 They say that ‘Charity begins at home’. Do you agree? For example, in your opinion, should the younger
generations of a family help the elderly generation? Why? / Why not?

 When there is a natural disaster somewhere in the world, why should other (unaffected) countries send aid?

 If you were in charge of international aid operations what type of aid would you send to a disaster zone
first of all – food and water, medicine and doctors, blankets and shelters (e.g. tents) or rescue experts and
equipment?

 ‘We should help the poor in our own country before sending aid to other countries’. Do you agree? Why? /

After watching the episode of Friends and discussing about the pros and cons of doing charity,
you will write an essay answering the question above. To do so, first brainstorm about the topic and make
notes. After that, organize your notes into coherent paragraphs. Decide what you are going to say in the
introduction, main body and conclusion of your essay.
