Quick Start Instructions

1. Download our free Easy Quiz software at www.affordablebuzzers.com/easyquiz-download.html
 Click Add to Cart and complete the FREE checkout. You will receive an email with a link for your
free download.
 Download the ZIP file or EXE file depending on your preference. The two downloads are identical
except that the EXE file permits automatic self-extraction on a Windows PC computer. A new
folder called Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz will be automatically created. Be sure to keep all the
files in this new folder together on your computer.
Note: Some operating systems such as Windows 7, 8 & 10 will permit you to navigate inside a zip file
as if it was a regular folder, but the quiz game application will not work correctly unless you actually
extract the contents of the downloaded file.
 You may place your new folder wherever you wish on your computer such as on your “Desktop”
in your “My Documents” folder, or even on a USB flash drive. Just be sure to copy the entire
Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz folder since the software requires all the files contained in this folder
for proper operation.
2. Verify your Java version at www.java.com
 Java is a computing platform used by billions of web sites and applications.
 Since Easy Quiz requires Java 7 or higher, checking your Java version will avoid any problems with
using our Easy Quiz software. When updating your Java version, always uninstall any older ver-
sions of Java.
 Go to www.java.com
(Do NOT click the “Free Java Download” button)
 Click the link: “Do I have Java?”
and follow the instructions.
3. Start your quiz game by double-clicking the
Easy Quiz 3.3.20.jar file.
 Refer to the rest of this manual for operation details and instructions for customizing
your quiz game.
4. No buzzers yet?
 If you do not yet have an Affordable Buzzers system or you have downloaded Easy Quiz to
give it a try, simply use the number keys on your keyboard to simulate players pressing their
buzzers. This will work exactly the same as pressing the buzzers once they are connected to
your computer.

Important Reminders:
 Java is required to run our Easy Quiz software. If you receive an error message that your computer “cannot
open the file,” it means that you do not have Java installed on your computer. Use the link above to verify
your Java installation and follow the instructions provided if it is detected that a free installation or upgrade
is needed.
 Keep all the files and the “data” folder together inside the Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz folder. If you receive
an error stating “not all files are present,” it means that you have either not unzipped your downloaded file
or you have moved the EasyQuiz.jar file outside of this home folder.
Menu
This screen will appear when you first start the
Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz game.
1. Enter Player Names: Allows you to enter the names of all
the players in your game.
2. Enter Team Names: Allows you to enter the names of all
your team assignments when grouping buzzers into teams.
This menu button will only appear when you select “Team
Play” from the setup screen (see the “Game Setup” section
below for details).
3. Test Buzzers: Allows players to test their buzzers before you
begin your quiz (see the “Test Buzzers” section below for
details).
4. Begin Quiz: After your player names have been entered, use
this button to start your quiz game. The button text will automatically change based on the game type selected on the
Game Setup screen (discussed below). Likewise, the game type selected will be displayed at the top of the menu buttons.
5. Display Player Scores: Use this button to display and/or edit the scores for all players.
6. Quit Game: Exit the Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz.
7. Setup Gear (corner icon): Clicking this icon will present the setup screen which allows you to easily customize the sounds
and other aspects of your quiz.

Enter Player Names

1. Type the name of each of your quiz players on this screen.
Whatever text you enter here will appear on the screen during
game play to identify the player who should answer a
question—that is, the first player to “buzz-in” by pressing their
buzzer.
2. Be sure to match the player number on this screen with the
number of the buzzer each player will be using during the
game. In the example shown, JOHN should use the buzzer
connected to #1 on the interface box, SARAH should use the
buzzer connected to #2, etc. Wireless buzzers are numbered
on the bottom of the each buzzer.
3. You don’t need to enter all 50 names and name fields don’t
need to be filled in consecutively. Leaving any unused name
fields blank effectively disables those buzzer numbers during
game play, but leaving name fields populated will cause no harm if those buzzers are not put into game play.
4. Names entered on this screen will be stored when you exit the game and reloaded the next time you start the Easy Quiz
software. You may also save them to a specific “saved quiz” file for later retrieval (see the “Game Setup” section below).

Test Buzzers
1. This screen is optional but it will give both you and your
players assurance that each of their buzzers are registering
with the computer and working properly.
2. As each player presses their buzzer, the computer will
change the color or their buzzer number and will play the
sound associated with that buzzer (more on sounds later).
Additional buzzer presses will continue to flash the buzzer’s
number and play its associated sound.
Note that this activity with many players may burden your
computer and make your mouse difficult to operate. We
suggest using the “M” key instead of the mouse to return to
the main menu.
3. The Reset Names button will clear all name fields for
additional testing.
4. Use the Back to menu button or press the “M” key to exit this screen and continue
the quiz.
5. The Test Buzzers screen will automatically adjust text size to accommodate 10 player
games, 11-20 player games, and 21-50 player games where only the buzzer numbers
will be shown, not the player names.

Get Ready
1. This is the first screen you will see when starting your quiz by clicking “Begin Quiz” on the Main Menu. This screen alerts
the players to get ready for the next question. The player
buzzers will not be activated until you advance to the next
screen by pressing the Spacebar on the computer keyboard.
If you have a wireless Easy Quiz Remote, any of the buttons
on the remote will advance to the next screen. The Buzzers
On! screen will then appear and all player buzzers will be
activated.
2. Penalty Alert: If players attempt to “buzz-in” early while
this screen is displayed, or hold their buzzer buttons down
in anticipation of the Buzzers On! screen appearing, they
will be penalized two seconds (adjustable—see Setup
screen). That is, once the Buzzers On! screen is displayed,
the buzzers for those penalized players will not be activated
until the penalty time expires.
Note: You may choose to activate the buzzers before or after the question is presented. Some quiz hosts prefer to give all
players a chance to hear or see the entire question before allowing anyone to “buzz-in.” Others prefer to allow “buzz-in” at
any time while the question is being presented.

Buzzers On!
1. When this screen appears all player buzzers are active
(except those tagged for an early “buzz-in” penalty).
The first player to press their buzzer while this screen is
displayed will win the opportunity to answer the question.
2. Buzzers for players tagged with an early “buzz-in” penalty
will not be activated until the penalty time expires.
3. Each player will have only one chance to answer each
question. If their answer is wrong, their buzzer will be
disabled until the next question begins at the
Get Ready screen.
4. The “Answer Value” number shows how many points will
be awarded for a correct answer (adjustable—see Setup
screen). This value will decrease for each wrong answer by a factor multiplier (default is .5—see Setup screen).

Buzz-in Names
1. This screen displays the name of the first player to “Buzz-in”
by pressing their buzzer after the Buzzers On! screen appears.
The sound associated with this player’s buzzer number will
also be heard (sound is adjustable—see Setup screen). This is
the player who may now answer the question.
2. For a R-ight answer, press the R key on your keyboard or the
GREEN button on the Easy Quiz Host Remote. This causes a
cheerful DING sound and displays the victorious Right screen
(sound is adjustable—see Setup screen). The current “right
answer” point value will be added to the player’s score.
3. For a W-rong answer, press the W key on your keyboard or the
RED button on the Easy Quiz Host Remote. This causes the
dreaded wrong-answer BUZZER sound and displays the scornful Wrong screen (sound is adjustable—see Setup screen).
The “wrong answer” point value will be subtracted from the player’s score. By default, 1/3 of the current “Answer Value”
will be subtracted for a wrong answer. This calculation is adjustable by using the Setup screen.
4. The “Seconds remaining” count-down timer at the top of the screen will start with 8 seconds by default, but is adjustable
on the Setup screen. The assigned “tick-tock” sound will be heard as each second is counted down, and when the timer
reaches 0, the sound assigned for “time expired” will be heard. What happens at this point is up to the quiz host, such as
prompting the player for their final answer, or pressing the W-rong answer key thereby deducting points from the player
and giving other players a chance to answer, or perhaps no action at all besides using the timer to add fun and drama. The
timer can be removed from display entirely by using the Setup screen.
5. The “Answer Value” shown at the bottom of the screen is the current number of points that will be awarded for a correct
answer. This value is reduced by 50% each time a wrong answer is given for this question (adjustable—see Setup screen).
6. The Spacebar on your keyboard or any button on the Easy Quiz Remote may be used to skip this question and advance
to the Get Ready screen where all buzzers will be reset and the next question may be presented. In this case, player scores
are not affected beyond whatever points may have already been deducted for wrong answers to this question.
Penalty Alert: If players press their buzzers while this screen is displayed, or hold their buzzer buttons down in anticipation
of the Wrong Answer screen appearing so they can “buzz-in” again, they will be penalized two seconds (adjustable—see
Setup screen). That is, if the Wrong Answer screen does appear, the buzzers for those penalized players will not be
activated until the penalty time expires.

Wrong! (Wrong answer)

1. When the W-rong answer is signaled by the quiz host as described above, this dreaded Wrong screen will appear along
with a disqualifying “buzz” sound (sound is adjustable by using the Setup screen).
2. The penalty points for this wrong answer is shown in the
upper right hand corner and is subtracted from the player’s
score. This value is calculated by multiplying the “Answer
Value” from the previous screen by the “WRONG answer
points factor” (adjustable—see Setup screen). The new 50%
reduced “Answer Value” now shown on the this screen is
the number of points that will be awarded if a subsequent
player answers correctly.
3. The buzzer for the player or team who provided the wrong
answer will now be disabled, but any player/team who has
not yet answered this question may still race to “buzz-in”
while this screen is displayed and attempt to answer the
question. Note that the answer value has been reduced by
50% for the next player to buzz-in (adjustable—see Setup
screen).
4. If no other players buzz-in to answer this question, or if the quiz host wishes to skip the question for any reason, the
Spacebar or any button on the Easy Quiz Remote can be used to advance to the Scores screen or the Get Ready screen
depending on your Setup screen settings.

Right! (Right answer)

1. When a R-ight answer is signaled by the quiz host as
described above, this congratulatory screen will appear with
a victorious DING sound (sound is adjustable by using the
Setup screen).
2. The current “right answer” point value shown in the upper
right hand corner and is added to the player’s score.
3. This question is completed and out of play. All buzzers are
deactivated.
4. Use the Spacebar or any button on the Easy Quiz Remote
to advance to the Scores screen or the Get Ready screen
depending on your Setup screen settings.
Scores
1. For each “Right” answer, a player is awarded points, and for
each “Wrong” answer points are deducted.
2. The initial value for a right answer is set when the Buzzers On!
screen first appears for each new question. This “Answer
Value” is 100 by default but can be changed using the Setup
screen. For each wrong answer on a given question, the
“Answer Value” is reduced by 50% (adjustable on the Setup
screen). The “Answer Value” points are added to a player’s
score whenever the Right screen appears.
3. The value of the “wrong answer” points is determined by a multiplication factor applied to the current “Answer Value.”
These points are subtracted from a player’s score whenever the Wrong answer screen appears.
4. The scores on this screen are displayed in ascending sequence left to right and top down to make it easy to identify player
rankings. The scores may also be edited on this screen. If the quiz host mistakenly presses an incorrect key during the
game play causing a player’s score to be calculated incorrectly, the error can be corrected by using this screen.
5. From the Get Ready screen, pressing the letter S key (for Scores) will present this screen to display the current scores next
to each player’s name. This screen can also be displayed from the main menu by pressing the “Display Player Scores” but-
ton. Press the Space Bar or any key on the Easy Quiz Remote to return to the Get Ready screen.
6. Scores can be saved on your computer to accommodate pausing a quiz and continuing at a later date. See the
“Config save & restore” section under “Game Setup” below.

Game Setup (Gear Icon)

Clicking the “Gear Icon” in the upper right hand corner of the
Main Menu screen will present the game Setup screen. Here you
can adjust various settings that affect your quiz. Note the three
tabs available: “General”, “Sounds” and “Config save & restore.”
General setting tab
Game type will be discussed below, but since all the other set-
tings affect the four available game types, let’s discuss them first.
RIGHT answer points: This is the initial “Answer Value” for each
new question when the Buzzer On! screen appears. If the first
person to answer the question is correct, this value will be added
to their score. For each wrong answer to a given question, this
value will be reduced by the factor shown in the next field.
Answer value reduction factor: Whenever a player gives the wrong answer, the “Answer Value” will be reduced by this
multiplication factor. In the example settings shown, if the first player answers incorrectly, the Answer Value for the second
try will be 50 points (initial Answer Value of 100 * 0.5 = 50). If the second answer is also wrong, the Answer Value for the third
try will be 25 points (current Answer Value of 50 * .5 = 25), and so on.
WRONG answer points factor: This multiplier will be applied to the current answer value when a player answers incorrectly.
In the example settings shown, if the first player to answer a question is wrong, 30 points will be deducted from the player’s
score (initial Answer Value of 100 * 0.3 = 30). If the second player to answer is wrong, 15 points will be deducted (current
answer value of 50 * 0.3 = 15). Note that an entry greater than “1” will be considered by the software to be a “1.”
Penalty time in seconds: This is the number of seconds that a player’s buzzer will be disabled due to an “early buzz-in
penalty.” In order to prevent overly aggressive players from dominating your quiz, this setting can prevent them from hold-
ing their buzzer buttons down or pressing them continuously while a question is being presented. Players should not press
their buzzers until the quiz host presents the Buzzers On! screen, thus activating the buzzers. If a player presses their buzzer
before the Buzzer On! screen appears, they will have to wait the number of seconds specified by this setting until their
buzzer will become active. This penalty will also be applied if a player presses their buzzer while another player is attempting
to answer a question—while the Buzz-in Names screen is displayed. Players should wait for the Wrong answer screen
before pressing their buzzer for a chance to answer. If they press their buzzer before the Wrong answer screen appears, they
will have to wait the number of seconds specified by this setting until their buzzer will become active. Note that decimal
numbers are permitted for this setting, so .5 would mean a 1/2 second penalty. To disable the early buzz-in penalty, enter a
zero in this field. (Rumor has it that the TV Jeopardy game applies a 1/4 second penalty for early buzz-in—a setting of .25 in
this field.)
Font for NAMES screen: This is the name of a computer font installed on your computer that will be used for all names
displayed on the Buzz-in Names screen. (Tip: You may have to look at the font file names on your file system or in your
computer fonts setup dialogs to discover the correct font names available.)
Show status names: When checked, the names of any players who were tagged for an early buzz-in penalty will be displayed
down the sides of the Buzz-in Names screen. Likewise, the name of all players who have already answered this question
incorrectly are shown. When unchecked, only the name of the first player to buzz-in will be displayed in the center of the
screen. Showing status names is a handy way to explain away erroneous claims from players of “non-working” buzzers. For
a complete explanation, see the Buzz-in Status Names section.
First player to buzz-in font size: Font size for the player name
that displays in the center of the screen.
First player to buzz-in font color: Font color for the player name
that displays in the center of the screen. Click on this color
swatch will present a pop-up color picker for easy customization.
ACTIVE status name color: No longer used.
PENALTY status name color: Font color for players who were
tagged with an early buzz-in penalty. These are the players who
pressed their button before the Buzzers On! or Wrong answer
screen was displayed.
WRONG answer name color: Font color for players with
deactivated buzzers—those who already answered this question incorrectly.
Show “Back to menu” button: Checkbox to turn display of the “Back to menu” button on or off.
Show scores screen automatically: When checked, the Scores screen will appear at the end of every question just prior to the
Get Ready screen. When unchecked the Main Menu must be used to display the Scores screen, or the “S” key may be
pressed while the Get Ready screen is displayed.
Countdown timer seconds: Initial setting of the countdown timer each time a player buzzes-in to answer a question. When
the timer reaches zero, the “expired time” sound is played, but no other action is taken by the software. This leaves flexibility
for the quiz host to take different actions for different quiz groups: perhaps a verbal demand for a final answer, perhaps the
W-rong answer key is pressed immediately so the player loses points, or perhaps no action at all is taken besides enjoying the
added fun of the ticking clock.
Game type:
1. Two types of quizzes are available: Standard and Team Play. You can also select two additional “buzzer fun” games:
Quick Draw and Speed Race. We’ll discuss only the quiz games here. Instructions for Quick Draw and Speed Race can be
found at the end of this User Guide.
2. In a “Standard quiz“ each player is assigned a numbered buzzer and the player’s name is entered for that buzzer number
on the Enter Player Names screen as discussed earlier. Note that even if you choose to have two or more players share a
buzzer thereby acting as a team, you will still assign one buzzer number to each player/team when playing a “Standard
quiz.” Use the scroll bar to access all available player name fields.
3. When selecting a game type setting of “Team play,” you may group two or
more buzzers together to act as a single buzzer. A maximum of 20 teams are
permitted. As an example, for a classic quiz of boys verses girls, you would
select a game type of “Team play,” then select Enter Team Names from the
Main Menu and enter the names for your teams as shown.
4. Moving to the Enter Player Names screen, you must first enter names for
each of the buzzers you plan to use in your quiz, then assign a team using
the pull-down selector. In this example, we don’t really care
about the names of individual players so we just entered “Buzzer
#1—Buzzer #10.” You may now distribute buzzers 1—5
throughout the room wherever the boys are situated. Likewise,
distribute buzzers 6—10 among the girl contestants. Now when
the Buzzers On! screen is presented, any of the buzzers 1—5 will
buzz-in for the “Boys” team, and any of the buzzers 6—10 will
buzz-in for the “Girls” team. Note that the player name (or
buzzer number in this example) is also displayed on the screen.
This provides flexibility for the quiz host to decide whether team
members are permitted to consult on a final answer, or whether the named player must answer on behalf of the team.
5. In another example, lets assume you want three teams named
Lions, Tigers, and Bears. After entering those team names on
the Enter Team Names screen, you’ll need to assign each player
to one of those teams on the Enter Player Names screen.
JOHN, SARAH and DAVID will comprise the Lions team,
MICHELLE, MANISHA and ROBERT want to work together as
the Tigers, and CARLOS and SOPHIE will be the Bears team.
Note that the buzzer numbers assigned to a team need not be
consecutive. Distribute the numbered buzzers to each of the
designated players.
6. Now when either JOHN, SARAH or DAVID press their individual
buzzers, “Lions” will appear on the Buzz-in Names screen
along with the player who pressed their buzzer. Let’s suppose
that SARAH was first to buzz-in. Depending on your quiz rules,
either SARAH alone, or the entire team must decide on an
answer. But when the wrong answer is provided, team “Lions”
will lose 30 points (100 * .3 in this example) and the remaining
two teams may race again for their chance to answer the
question. Note that all the buzzers assigned to team Lions are
now disabled from buzzing-in a second time. When CARLOS now
buzzes-in, team “Bears” must answer and either gain or lose
points for their team depending on their answer.
7. Player names, Team names, scores and all other settings may
be stored and reloaded later by using the “Config save &
restore” feature on the Setup screen (discussed below). All
stored settings for your Team Play quiz are kept separate from
any names and settings entered and stored for the “Standard” quiz setup.
Sounds setting tab
1. All sounds used in Easy Quiz can be customized using the
“Sounds” tab on the Setup screen.
2. Use the pull-down field next to each label to select the sound
file you want for each item. Note that the “sounds” folder in-
side your “Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz” folder will be used
for all sound selections. If you wish, you may create additional
folders inside the “sounds” folder to organize your sound files.
The pull-down selector will show the full path of each file so it
is best to keep any new folder names short.
3. Use the “play” button next to each item to hear your selected
sound.
4. During a “Standard quiz,” the sounds for “Player 1” through “Player 50” will be used when players buzz-in to answer a
question. During a “Team play quiz,” the sounds for “Team 1” through “Team 20” will be used.
5. Any WAV format sound file can be used for your Easy Quiz sounds. You can even record your own sounds or “speak” the
names of your teams and players using computer recording software. Just be sure to save your recordings in WAV file for-
mat and place them inside the “sounds” folder or a subfolder under the “sounds” folder.
6. Since this setup screen looks for a “sounds” folder relative to the location of the Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz.jar file, you
can move the entire Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz folder wherever you like on your computer and all your sound selections
will still work. You can even move the parent folder to a flash drive and take your quiz on the road. Just be sure to copy or
move the entire Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz folder and all its contents to keep your quiz working flawlessly.

(User Guide continues on next page.)

Buzz-In Status Names (on the Buzz-in Names Screen)
Besides displaying the name of the player who was first to press their buzzer, the Buzz-in Names screen will also display
other player names under certain conditions:
A) The player has already answered this question incorrectly
B)The player was tagged for an early buzz-in penalty
These names are color coded for easy identification. Display of these
status names is optional (see Setup screen).
Consider the following example:
1. Let’s assume that we just presented a new question and JOHN was the
first to press his buzzer when the Buzzers On! screen appeared. The
Buzz-in Names screen shown here illustrates this with JOHN’s name in
the center.
2. Next, JOHN answers incorrectly, so when the Wrong answer screen
appears, MICHELLE is the first player to press her buzzer. The Buzz-in
Names screen will now look like this. JOHN’s name shows up in GRAY
because his buzzer has been disabled for this question since he has
already had a chance but gave the wrong answer.
3. Now players are anticipating another wrong answer by MICHELLE.
CARLOS and MANISHA press their buzzers too early, before the Wrong
answer screen appears. Consequently, they are tagged for an early
buzz-in penalty (penalty time is adjustable—see Setup screen). So when
MICHELLE gives a wrong answer and the Wrong answer screen finally
appears, CARLOS and MANISHA press their buzzers again, but nothing
will happen for them until the penalty time has expired.
4. Meanwhile, SOPHIE presses her buzzer and the Buzz-in Names screen
looks like this to show that JOHN and MICHELLE have been DISABLED
due to wrong answers and CARLOS and MANISHA were subjected to an
early buzz-in penalty. If no one had buzzed-in during the penalty wait time
(2 seconds by default—see Setup screen) the buzzers for CARLOS and
MANISHA would have been reactivated allowing them to participate
after the penalty wait time. Their status colors would still be red so everyone would know why their buzzers were delayed.
The RED-PENALTY colors are reset by either the Wrong or Get Ready screens.
The GRAY-DISABLED status is reset only on the Get Ready screen when the next question is presented.

(User Guide continues on next page.)

Quick Draw Game
Quick Draw is not a quiz—it’s just a fun buzzer activity game for up to ten players. As the name implies, players compete in a
playful but competitive match against others in a race of quick reflexes.

Object
The object for each player is simple: be first to press your buzzer whenever the Buzzer On! screen appears, and resist pressing
your buzzer when the quiz host attempts to trick you with the dreaded Gotcha! screen. Being first to buzz-in at the Buzzers On!
screen will earn one point. Getting tricked into pressing your buzzer at the Gotcha! screen will not deduct from your score, but
your buzzer will be delayed the next time the Buzzers On! screen appears permitting one of your opponents to steal that point.
The first player to reach the preset winning score will win the match.

Game Setup (Gear Icon)

Clicking the “Gear Icon” in the upper right hand corner of the Main Menu screen will present the game Setup screen.
General setting tab
1. Game type: Use the pull-down selector to choose “Quick Draw.”
2. Quick Draw winning points: Enter the number of points a player must accumulate in order to win the game.
3. Penalty time in seconds: Make sure to enter 1 or more in this field. This is necessary to insure that a player’s buzzer is
“disabled” after the player mistakenly presses their buzzer at the Gotcha! screen. If this field is set to zero, a player who
presses their buzzer at the Gotcha! screen will not be penalized the next time the Buzzers On! screen appears, effectively
disabling the “Gotcha” feature of the game.
Sounds setting tab
1. Quick Draw Winner: Select the sound to be played when the winning score is reached and the winner’s screen is displayed.
2. Quick Draw Fake: Select the sound to be played when the GOTCHA! Screen is displayed.
Main Menu
1. Enter Player Names: From the Main Menu, click the “Enter Player Names” button. On the Enter Player Names screen, enter
the names of up to 10 players. (Quick Draw supports a maximum of 10 buzzers.) If you plan to switch players frequently over
several Quick Draw matches, just enter something like “One, Two, Three, etc.” for the player names. Any text entered in
these fields “activates” the corresponding buzzer for use in the game. Leaving a buzzer number blank on this page
effectively disables the corresponding buzzer for use in the game.

How to play
1. From the Main Menu, click the Begin Game: Quick Draw button.
The Get Ready screen is displayed.
2. From the Get Ready screen, the quiz host may press the Spacebar, the
W key, the R key, or either button on the optional Easy Quiz Host
Remote. The Buzzers On! screen will then be displayed.
3. Buzzers On! screen: Every time this screen appears, all players race to be
the first to press their buzzer.
4. Names screen: The name of the player to press their buzzer first is
displayed in the center of the screen along with their current score. The
names of all players with their scores are displayed down both sides of the
screen. The quiz host now has the choice of presenting the Buzzers On!
screen for players to race once again to buzz-in, or attempt to trick them with
the Gotcha! Screen.
Quiz host control keys:
 For Buzzers On! screen, press the W key
or the RED button on the Easy Quiz Host Remote
 For the Gotcha! Screen, press the R key
or the GREEN button on the Easy Quiz Host Remote
 To skip or advance the screen, press the Spacebar
 Scores: S key, Menu: M key
5. Gotcha! screen: Players must NOT press their buzzer when this screen is
displayed. If they do, their buzzer will be delayed when the next Buzzers
On! screen appears, permitting one of your opponents to steal that point.
If all players were tricked by the Gotcha! screen, then all buzzers will
become active after the penalty time has elapsed. Note that the Penalty
Time in seconds field on the quiz Setup screen must have a value greater
than zero for this buzzer delay feature to work.
The Quiz Host can jump to either of these screens in rapid succession so
players must be on their toes to watch for the Buzzers On! screen, but resist
pressing their buzzer at the Gotcha! screen. Once a player wins the match, the
quiz host will be prompted for optional resetting of the scores. The scores may be left in tact so the Scores screen can be
viewed with player rankings, and the scores can be reset to zero using the RESET SCORES button to begin a new match.

Speed Race Game
Speed Race is not a quiz—it’s just a fun buzzer activity game where players repeatedly press their buzzer as quickly as they can
racing against their competitors to be the first to reach the winning score.
Note: Wired buzzers work best for this game. Wireless buzzers have a built-in one second delay each time after the buzzer is
pressed. This is necessary for the most accurate wireless response in the “quiz” game types.

Object
Each player presses their buzzer as quickly as possible earning one point for each press of the buzzer. The first player to reach
the target winning score wins the match.

Game Setup (Gear Icon)

Clicking the “Gear Icon” in the upper right hand corner of the Main Menu screen will present the game Setup screen.
General setting tab
1. Game type: Use the pull-down selector to choose “Speed Race.”
2. Speed Race winning points: Enter the number of points players must accumulate in order to win the game.
Sounds setting tab
1. Speed Race Winner: Select the sound to be played when the winning score is reached and the winner’s screen is displayed.
2. Speed Race Leader: Select the sound to be played whenever the name of the lead player changes. This sound is just to draw
attention to the fact that a new player has overtaken the current leader.
Main Menu
1. Enter Player Names: From the Main Menu, click the “Enter Player Names” button. On the Enter Player Names screen, enter
the names of up to 10 players. (Speed Race supports a maximum of 10 buzzers.) If you plan to switch players frequently over
several Speed Race matches, just enter something like “One, Two, Three, etc.” for the player names. Any text entered in
these fields “activates” the corresponding buzzer for use in the game. Leaving a buzzer number blank on this page
effectively disables the corresponding buzzer for use in the game.

How to play
1. From the Main Menu, click the Begin Game: Speed Race button. The Get Ready screen will be displayed.
2. From the Get Ready screen, the quiz host may press the Spacebar, the W key, the R key, or either button on the optional
Easy Quiz Host Remote. The Names screen appears to signal the beginning of the match and all players may being pressing
their buzzers as quickly as possible.
3. Names screen: The name of the player who currently has the highest score will be displayed in the center of the screen
along with their current score. The names of all players with their scores are displayed down both sides of the screen. Each
time a player presses their buzzer, one point will be added to their score.
Whenever one player overtakes the current leader, the new leader’s
name will be displayed and the “Speed Race Leader” sound will be
played so everyone knows there is a new leader in the match.
Note: Holding a buzzer button down will NOT improve a player’s score. A
point is awarded only for each press and release of the buzzer button.
4. The Elapsed Time counter at the top of the screen simply ticks off the
seconds as the match proceeds. Once a player reaches the winning
score, their name and total elapsed time will be displayed. “High Score”
records are not maintained by the software so you may want to make
note of this Elapsed Time to track your own High Score records.
5. Hints on winning score settings:
 With Table-Top buzzers, players will reach a score of 100 in 10-15 seconds with ease.
 Players will reach 200 points in about 30 seconds with only a little fatigue.
 A score of 300 points can be reached in under 60 seconds but most players will experience significant muscle fatigue.
There are no preset rules for whether players can use their right hand, left hand, or both hands. These rules are left to the quiz
host. You may even want to experiment with tag-teams where players can switch with their teammates when they become
too tired to continue.
What are the other files included in the Affordable Buzzers Easy Quiz folder?
 config.txt
 This file is used by the Easy Quiz software to store various settings for the quiz game such as fonts, colors, and game
parameters. These settings are discussed in detail in the Game Setup section of this User Guide. This file MUST be
present for the software to work correctly, but does not require any direct editing.
 /data folder
 The graphics and sound files used by the software are contained in this folder. Customizing your quiz game by
adjusting these files is discussed in detail in the Game Setup section of this User Guide. This FOLDER and its contents
must be present for the software to work correctly.
 /data/sounds folder
 The WAV files found in the root of this folder are the default sounds used by the Easy Quiz software. These files MUST
be present for the software to work correctly, but they can be overridden by making new sound selections as described
in the Game Setup section of this User Guide. Note that even if you override these default sounds, the files must remain
in place—just in case you ever “unselect” your custom sounds.
 You may add your own custom sound files which will be available for selection in the Setup screen. We recommend
placing them in the /data/sounds/Misc folder, or create a new folder for your new sound files. You can create as many
new folders as you like as long as they are under the /data/sounds folder since this is the location the software lists
when making new sound selections. You should also keep your folder names short since the pull-down window for
selecting sound files is limited in size.
 Since any WAV format sound file will work with the Easy Quiz software, you can even create your own sound files using
a computer sound recording application. With this method, you can have your quiz “speak” the names of your players
or teams by recording your voice and saving the recordings as individual WAV files. As mentioned, be sure to place the
new WAV files under the /data/sounds folder so the Setup screen will be able to list them for your selection.
 /data/saved_quizzes folder
 Files in this folder are created when you use the “Save Config” feature under the “Config save & restore” tab on the
Setup screen. While these files can be edited with a plain text editor, it is generally much easier to use the Easy Quiz
Setup screen to make the desired changes in your quiz configurations. You may safely delete these files at any time if
you no long require them. (There is no config “delete” capability provided on the Easy Quiz Setup screen.)
 The FACTORY-SETTING.txt file contains all the default settings from the original file download.
 The autosaved-config.txt file is a safety feature that should contain all the last names, scores and settings if your
computer ever fails for any reason in the middle of a quiz game.

Changing your quiz game graphic screens

This capability is offered for the advanced computer user.

 /data/images
 The image files used by this application are found in this folder. These files MUST be present for the software to work
correctly.
 You may substitute your own files in place of those found in this folder, but they must be named exactly as the original
files.
 The files should be high resolution PNG file format.
 If, after experimenting with these image files you wish to switch back to the original distribution images, they
can be found in the /data/images/Original folder. Simply copy these files back into the /data/images folder.
