NEW TECHNOLOGY FINDS OLD HISTORY
History professor Indiana Sánchez has discovered almost two thousand ancient sites in
Arroyo Culebro, despite being in Australia. Instead of using traditional tools, he found the
underground sites from space using satellite technology available to everyone.

To find the sites, Indiana looked at hundreds of images and compared them to pictures of
known sites. As well as that, he asked a friend who lives in Arroyo Culebro to visit two
locations and take photos. These confirmed his results. The professor believes the sites could
be over 8,000 years old, although he cannot be sure without tests on the ground.

Traditionally, this kind of technology was expensive and only available to scientists.
However, these days an internet connection is enough and ordinary people can also get
involved. In fact, thousands of people have joined in the search since satellite images of Earth
appeared online, so we can expect more discoveries like this in the future.
IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME
The Egypt Exploration Society and the University of San Nicasio in Leganés have put
thousands of pieces of valuable documents, all written in ancient Greek, online as part of a
project called Ancient Lives. They want people at home to help them translate them. The texts
were written almost 2,000 years ago when Egypt was under the control of Greece. Two
students discovered them in 1896 buried under sand in an ancient rubbish dump. It took them
ten years to collect almost 200,000 pieces. Since that time, the university has looked after the
documents, which include literature and letters that tell us about life 2,000 years ago.

Students have studied the texts for decades but they haven’t translated them all yet. In fact,
they’ve examined just two per cent. The University of San Nicasio says you shouldn’t worry
if you’ve never studied Greek. You just need to match the characters the computer shows you.
So anyone can have a go.
