They can earn up to $1000 for just one tiger skin - and that's a lot of money in these parts. Ranjit said that tourists will sometimes pay even more than that just for the skin. I said that we should stop the tourists from buying the skins, then no-one will have to kill the tigers! I must run. There's a bus about to leave for a Tiger Trail. I don't want to miss it. These strands are: + Content + Audience/Composition + Style + Text Structure and Organisation + Vocabulary + Spelling Each strand is assessed individually, thus allowing a more precise analysis ofthe child's strengths and weaknesses in writing. The mark scheme has also been derived in such a way that skills related fo text composition, writing for a specific audience/purpose and sustaining a particular style are separate from skils relating to technical language use. This has the effect of not over-penalising children for whom English is not their mother tongue and allowing their skils in text composition and writing style to be rewarded. ‘Marking should always begin from the lowest mark in each column. Consider the statements describing the requirements for one mark. If these requirements clearly are ‘not met 0 marks should be awarded. If the writing meets al the criteria for one mark, the marker should consider the requirements for two marks and continue up the column until they reach the first criterion that the child has failed to achieve. The child should be ‘awarded the mark relating to the last completely fulfilled box. ll he requirements in a box must be achieved for the child to be awarded the mark; if here are two statements, both must be achieved otherwise the next lowest mark should be awarded. Grandpa and all the other people are really missing you. Did you help the trapped tiger and is it safe? How was the tiger trail, did you find exiting resorts and did you find lots of tigers and was the jungle scary or fun. Were you allowed to come out of the car or not. | really hope you had fun and you are okay. After all the exit ment you really need to rest and tomorrow you shall really beg daddy to let you go on an elephant ride. | went to one when | was little and they were exiting, At home here it’s just raining and raining and while | write this letter, the house ie shaking with thunder. Although the salutation is consistent with Gran’s previous letter, the tone and style are not sufficiently similar forthe final mark. Audience (Marks awarded: 4} In addition to commenting on Sam's latest letter, Gran expresses her own reactions to it The exhortation to go and ride on elephant is followed by a detail from her own life which is intended to interest Sam and to give him a motivation for trying it himself, Gran is consistently giving Sam the message that he's better off where he is than at home with her. Siyle (Marks awarded: 1] The fact that there are several questions which are not correctly punctuated prevents this text from gaining more than 1 mark, Text structure (Marks awarded: 3) Paragraphs are consistently used in the letter to group ideas, although there are some anomalous sentences, particularly some of the questions at the beginning of the second Paragraph. These prevent the award of the final mark. @UCLES 2005 2 Vocabulary (Marks awarded: 2) Adjectives are offen used in the text and there is some evidence of expanded noun phrases (e.g. the house is shaking with thunder] to describe events, Spelling (Marks awarded: 2) Spelling is generally good. In the first paragraph Gran responds to Sam's last letter, both asking questions and making suggestions. in the second and third paragraphs she adds information about her own life to0. The style is not generally consistent with Gran’s previous letter. Audience (Marks awarded: 1) The letter contains an interested response to Sam's previous letter, even quoting from i. There is, however, no suggestion of Gran’s reaction fo the events and this prevents the ward of two points Style (Marks awarded: 3} The sentences are generally well punctuated, including some use of commas in complex. sentences (although there is one instance of a comma splice in Your grandad is in hospital, he had a small accident but no need to worry he will be back after 3-4 days.) Even within the first paragraph, the order of ideas is eclectic and in the third paragraph the subjects include what Sam, has been doing, the weather in the UK and the kittens. Vocabulary {Marks awarded: 1) There is some evidence of care taken in the choice of vocabulary, but none of the controlled use of noun phrases. There is clear reference to Sam's last letter through a lot of questions. There is, however, no new information introduced. Audience (Marks awarded: 0} The letter mostly comprises a sequence of questions which relate to Sam's previous letter. There is no evidence of careful choice of vocabulary to add interest. Style (Marks awarded: 0) Although the letter is written in sentences, there is only one full stop although there are a number of commas which appear at the end of sentences, Since this piece of writing doesn't fit the criteria for one point, no points can be awarded, ‘@UCLES 2005 26
