UEMT 3113 Operations research and

optimization
Tutorial #1

1. Construct a flow chart describe methodology adopted in operation research.

Graphical method

2. Nippon paint produces both interior and exterior paints from two raw materials,
M1 and M2. The following table provides the basic data of the problem:

Tons of raw material per ton of Maximum daily

Exterior paint Interior paint Availability (tons)
Raw material, M1 6 4 24
Raw material, M2 1 2 6
Profit per ton ($1000) 5 4

A market survey indicates that the daily demand for interior paint cannot
exceed that for exterior paint by more than 1 ton. Also, the maximum daily
demand for interior paint is 2 tons.

Nippon paint wants to determine the optimum (best) product mix of interior
and exterior paints that maximizes the total daily profit.

3. Oil Corp is building a refinery to produce four products: diesel, gasoline,

lubricants and jet fuel. The minimum demand (in bbl/day) for each of these
products is 14,000, 30,000, 10,000, and 8,000 respectively. Iraq and Dubai are
under contract to ship crude to Oil Corp. Because of the production quotas
specified by OPEC (organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), the new
refinery can receive at least 40% of its crude from Iraq and the remaining
amount from Dubai. Oil Corp predicts that the demand and crude oil quotas will
remain steady over the next 10 years.

The specifications of the two crude oils lead to different product mixes: One
barrel of Iraq crude yields .2 bbl of diesel, .25 bbl of gasoline, .1 bbl of lubricant,
and .15 bbl of jet fuel. The corresponding yields from Dubai crude are .1, .6, .15,
and .1, respectively. Oil Corp needs to determine the minimum capacity of the
refinery (in bbl/day).

4. A fruit grower has 150 acres of land available to raise two different varieties of
apple: Macintosh and Empire. It takes one day to trim an acre of Macintosh
apples and two days to trim an acre of Empire apples, and there are 240 days
per year available for trimming. It takes 0.3 day to pick an acre of Macintosh
apples and 0.1 day to pick an acre of Empire apples, and there are 30 days per

1
year available for picking. Find the number of acres of each fruit that should be
planted to maximize total profit, assuming that the profits are RM 140 per acre
for Macintosh apples and RM 235 per acre for Empire apples.

5. A manufacturer produces two models of mobile phone. The NTC model

requires 2.5 hours of assembly, while the NTC Pro model requires 3.0 hours of
assembly. The NTC model also requires 2.0 hours of prep and painting while
the NTC Pro model requires 4.0 hours. Both the NTC and NTC Pro models
require only one hour for packaging. The total amounts of time available for
assembly, painting, and packaging are 4000 hours, 5000 hours, and 1500 hours,
respectively. The profits per unit are RM 50 for the NTC model and RM 60 for
the NTC Pro model. (a) Find the number of each model that should be produced
to maximize profit and (b) find the maximum profit.
