Indian Social Reformers

Social Reformers are the people who fight against social evils like sati, female
infanticide, child marriage and many more. Social Reformers realized that for India to
get its freedom India would have to be united, so they decided to fight against the social
evils. Some of the social reformers are Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra
Vidyasagar, Dayanand Saraswati and many more.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy


Raja Ram Mohan Roy FRAS was an Indian reformer who was one of the founders of
Brahmo Samaj. He was given the title of Raja by Akbar II, a Mughal emperor. He was
known for his efforts to abolish the practices of sati and child marriage. Roy is
considered to be the "Father of Indian Renaissance" by many historians.

Roy believed education to be a tool for social reform.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagarwas was an Indian educator and social reformer of the nineteenth
century. He simplified the Bengali alphabet and type. He campaigned for Hindu widow
remarriage, petitioning the Legislative Council despite severe opposition

Many widows had to shave their heads and don white saris, supposedly to discourage attention
from men. They led a deplorable life, something Vidyasagar thought was unfair and sought to
change.

He also fought for social reforms against the caste system of India.
