Course Name: Mathematics and Statistics for Computer Science

Description: This course is a first-year, second-semester course intended for students pursuing
the two-year full-time Associate of Science degree in Computer Science program.
This course will equip the students with the foundational skills in mathematics
and statistics required for the computing discipline.

Exemption(s): There are no exemptions for this course.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. describe the basics of number theory


2. identify, describe, and use various trigonometric ratios and apply them
in problem-solving.
3. Apply matrix operations to solve systems of linear equations.
4. Perform basic calculus operations
5. Identify statistical distributions and use appropriate descriptive and
inferential statistical techniques for basic hypothesis testing

Multiple; Prime Factorization
2 Geometry and Trigonometry
Measure of Angles – Radians and Degrees; Conversion between radians and degrees;
Trigonometric Ratios
3 Trigonometric Identities
4 Linear Algebra
Introduction to Matrices; Matrix Operations – Additions and Multiplications; Row
Operations
5 Gaussian Elimination; Solutions of Systems of Linear Equations
6 Inverse; Determinants
7 Calculus
Limits and Continuity; Differentiability; Differentiation by First Principles; Chain
Rule, Product Rule, Quotient Rule.
8 Counting and Probability
Definitions; Introduction To Discrete Probability; Bayes’ Theorem
9 Permutations; Combinations; Pigeonhole Principle
10 Descriptive Statistics
Data Classification; Methods of data collection
11 Introduction to Sampling; Diagrams – Bar Charts, Pie Charts, Pictograms
12 The Normal Distributions – Properties and Applications
The Standard Normal Distribution
