Rejecting the Genie’s Wishes

Alladin expresses frustration to the Genie about constantly being asked what wishes he wants. He sees how lottery winners and those suddenly getting what they want often lose it all. Alladin believes there must be a catch to being granted wishes from rubbing a lamp. He says he will change his life through hard work instead of wishes and tells the Genie to go back in the bottle since he will not make any wishes.

Alladin

(Frustrated) All day long, it’s the same. Poof! ‘What do you want?’ Poof! ‘Thy wish is my
command.’ (Imitates the Genie) Can’t you see that I just want to be left alone? I don’t need
you popping out of nowhere asking me about stupid wishes. If I knew what to wish for, I
would’ve already done it.
The thing is, I don’t even want the stupid wishes. I have seen what happens to people who
suddenly get what they want. Those big-time lottery winners who say, “This won’t change
my life at all.” (Imitates the lottery winner). Then they go completely off the deep end. Buy
everything they can, down to the last rupee and end up losing everything. They might as well
not have won the lottery if you ask me.
Same thing here. I am not stupid. It’s too good to be true. What could sound better than to be
all of a sudden granted three wishes for doing absolutely nothing except rubbing the dust out
of an old lamp? (Mimics the action of rubbing the lamp) There’s bound to be a catch
somewhere. Like I will be giving up my soul to the devil or something. Or I’ll get sucked up
in the lamp and have to stay there while you get to be free.
Ha ha. I don’t need your wishes. (Speaks confidently) I’ll change my life on my own, thank
you very much. With hard work and determination, I will be living it up at the palace one
day. I don’t need some oversized Genie working magic in my life. So, Genie, you can just
pop yourself back in the bottle because I am not making any wishes.
