Antifouting System employs ultrasonic waves in the intensity and frequency bands which affect natural vibration in the molecoles of the fluids being treated. ‘The ours Systems to Ultrasounds, in the respect of all the International Norms and particularly of the U.S.Coasts Pollution and Sanictation Requirements for Vessels Foreign Flag, in how much they don't make use of any chemical liquid, additive ot toxic substance but exclusively of vibrations to High Frequency that of they disper- se without causing damages or alterations to the environment. Order in firm for Ocean S.r.l. NB696 -3- M.E.S. srl — Genova GENERAL DATE 1 General 1d ‘Non-destructive ultrasonics, a system developed relatively recently, already has a vast fields of applications and is likely to become even more widespread as techniques are refined and new applications systems are researched Non-destructive ultrasonics are used by M.E.S, — Molecular Energy Systems — for the following: - redueing marine fouling on cooling systems and undersea pumps - ultrasonic cleaning tanks by water and 3-5% biodegradable detergent (not our patent) The chief advantages of the M.E.S. system are: ~ use of compacts generators - limited costs of system - minimum running costs 12 The Technology of ultrasonic is based on the principle of high frequency propagation of mechanical vibrations (18 + 24 Khz) 2.1. The ultrasonic generator consist of: Tramsmission panel - card located at base of components (power oscillator) = control card - load resistor - rectifier - transfomers ~ interference filter - filter condensers Order in firm for Ocean S.r.1. NB696 M.E.S. srl — Genova ~ SCR (oscillators) ~ transformers for out-put to transducers ~ fuses - terminal block internal circuits ~- general power supply terminal block Front control panel - main power switch - supply indicator lamp - oscillator current controll ampmeter - power ultrasonic switch Transducer ~ aluminiutn conical part (negative resting on flange) ~ negative terminal - negative piezoelectric ceramic with X on top - positive terminal - positive piezoelectric ceramic with X on the bottom to fit the X on the negative ceramic - resonating block with the lapped part undemeath + screw stay with nut for fixture and self charging of the transducer, witch is effec- ted by sparking between the two ceramic. 22 Piezoelectricity The non-destructive ultrasonics system produces ultrasonic energy by means energy by means of Piezoelectricity In certain crystals compression or traction in the right direction with respect to the cry= stallographic axes will create electrical charges on the compressed surfaces of those ery- stals. Applying a p.d. across the two opposite faces of a crystal causes the crystal to expand on contract, depending on the polarity (see Fig. 1 below) Mechanical energy transfered to the crystal by deforming action is partly transformed into electrical energy, thus generating the electrical charges mentioned above. Order in firm for Ocean S.r.l. NB696 M.E.S. srl —- Genova This phenomenon is reversible. By applying a voltage to the two faces of the crystal deforma- tion results and electrical energy is thus transformed into mechanical energy. In the excited State the crystal vibrates mechanically with a frequency proportional to its thickness. 23 ‘Transducers ‘Transducer are devices which generate mechanical ultrasonic waves and trans mi them to solids and fluida. By accelerating the molecules in fluids ultrasonic waves diminish molecular tension and thus increase miscibility. In transducers the piezoelectric crystal is parallel to the support surface. NB696 -6- M.E.S. srl —- Genova 2.4 Transducers characteristics The chief characteristics of transducers are: frequency, dimension, refraction, (or transmission) angle, power supply. a) Vibration frequency Each transducers has its own range of frequencies and these determine wave beam characteristics, b) Nominal transducers dimensions The nominal dimensions of the transducers are those of the piezoelectric ceramic. This data is of particular importance of the behavior of the ultrasonic propagation according to Snell’s law ©) Nominal transducer transmission angle ‘The nominal transmission angle is the angle between the normal and the emission surface of the beam itself. This angle varies in relation to the speeds of ultrasonic propagation according to Snell’s law. 4) Ultrasonic beam refraction Applied to optics, Snell’s law enables us to calculate the direction of the ultra- sonic medium Fig.3 — Ultrasonic beam refraction (Snell's law) ¢) Power supply circuit Each circuit requires supply from the appropriate circuites Order in firm for Ocean S.r.1. NB696 -7- M.E.S. srl ~ Genova 3. THE PHYSICS OF ULTRASONIC 31 Ultrasonic waves Any elastic material Produce a sound wave because the elastic forces draw Parti- cles back to their rest position. In bodies ‘having a crystalline structure Particles may describe different trajectories, 32 Longitudinal waves and longitudinal wave velocity Longitudinal waves are formed when the direction of oscillation is parellel to the direction of wave position. A useful model for illustrating ultrasonic propagation is that of a construction of metal spheres connected by elastic springs. See Fig, below A Longitudinal farce applied to the first sphere in the model will be transmitted via the spring as a longitudinal farvee applied to the second spring and so on, Ultrasonic waves behave in a similar way. By positioning the transducer on the fluid duct compression waves are produced. The Velocity of propagation ofthis disturbance (see Fig 4) will depend on the elastic chara- teristics of the spring, and similarly the velocity of ultrasonic waves. Will depend on and be proportional to the elasticity modulus or Young s modulus of the material affected by the beam, The velocity of propagation is inversely proportional to the mass of the spheres If the mass is increased, the velocity of propagation will decrease This parameter may be considered the equivalent ofthe density ofthe material though wich the ultrasonic waves propagate — poate pe Fig.4 — Model of ultrasonic propagation Order in firm for Ocean S.r.1. NB696 M.E.S. srl — Genova A better model is shown in Fig.5, Here we see thatthe ultrasonic wave Propagation is also affected by the adjacent spheres. This introduce a third parameter, Poisorr, ratio, Fig.5 ~ Two dimensional model of uttrasonic wave propagation Propagation of the force applied to sphere 1 depend not only on the elements arranged JTongitudinally but also on the lateral elements 3.3 Ultrasonic beam formation ‘The piezoelectric crystal may be regarded as a set of elementary crystals which when all excited at the same time, cach contribute to the formation of the ultrasonic beam. ‘The pressure value of the ultrasonic beam is obtained by applying Huygen's principle Fig. 6 — Huygen’s Principle: ultrasonic beam formation Order in firm for Ocean S.r.l. NB696 M.E.S. srl — Genova ‘The preseure exerted by the ultrasonic beam and the subsequent deformation in any point P is the result of the amplitude and phase contributed by each of the elements making up the crystal The figure below provides a visual image of ultrasonic beam distribution, Fig.7 — Ultrasonic beam Order in firm for Ocean S.r.l.
