New weapons developments, especially in autoloaders, increased dramatically in the 1970's stimulated by the requirements put out in requests for new weapons by European militaries, Inthe United States, the JSSAP trials for a new US military handgun caused several new designs to become aveilable ‘Thegeneraltrendis forpolice agencies, espacial inNoth America, touserevalvers ‘while military agencies almost universelly useautolcader design. The revolver has the advantage of relative mechanical simplicity ‘with itsconcurrentmechanicairelibilty the bility ofr secondround inthe case ofa misfire, and the capacity to be easily produced in very powerful calibers. Along ‘with the ability touse the most powerful of cartridges, revolvers are also able to effectively utilize the widest range of loadings avilable for civen caliber. The simplicity of 8 revoher's operation allows training in its use to be equally simplified istols, as both revolvers and autoloaders are referred to, are among the most universal weapons found in the hands of counterterrorist groups throughout the world. With their small size and power, today’s pistols are increasingly more common, even in those elite military units in whose parent armies pistols On the disadvantage sido, revolvers are relatively bulkyand large, especially through the cylinder. The six round cylinder of the revolver is probably its weakest pant with the limited ammunition capacity greatly reducing the volume of fire that can be delivered in a short time and slowing reloading Autoloaders, most often erroneously referred to as “automatics”, have the advantages of velatvely large magavine capacity and easy reloading that results ina ‘very high volume of fir being available, The larger ammunition capacityalsoallowsmore targets to be engaged in a shorter time without reloading. The flat design of most autoloaders also allows concealed carry to be more easily accomplished. On the disadvantage side, autoloaders are much more mechenically complex and have @ areater range of jams than a revolver. Jems inanautoloader normally requirebothhands to clear, In a revolver most jams can be “cleared” by just pulling the trigger and bringing a fresh round into line. Those mare severe interruptions often result in the ‘weapon being completely cut of action and requiring professional attention. Modern ‘ammunition design has greatly lessened the possiilityofjamsandmisfresforallcasses of weapons and has greatly inoreased reliability Thesmll size of handguns allow them to be used in very close quarters, such asanaireraftcccknit, where other, longer, firearms wouldbe. distinct disadvantage ifnotimpossibleto quickly maneuver Other advantages include easy use with one hand while the other may be otherwise occupied. Allof these reasons and mare will result in the handgun being seen in the hands of counterterrorist and military forces for the foreseeable future, @ cn THE EDGE OF THE SWORD a4 PISTOLS @ CARTRIDGE OPERATION TYPE OF FIRE RATE OF FIRE (SS) MUZZLE VELOCITY MUZZLE ENERGY SIGHTS FEED WEIGHTS: WEAPON (EMPTY) WEAPON (LOADED) MAGAZINE (EMPTY) MAGAZINE (LOADED) SERVICE CARTRIDGE BULLET LENGTHS: WEAPON OVERALL BARREL SIGHT RADIUS STATUS SERVICE cost 3 9x19mm Gas-delayed blowback Semiautomatic, Double-action 4Orpm 396 m/s (1102 fps) 507 J 1974 ft/lb} Open, nan-adjustable w/iuminous inserts ‘18round removable box magazine 0.845 kg 1.190kg O122kg 0340 kg 12g bg 216m 160m 1640m Production completed Commercial sales $500.00 The GB was designed ase replacementpistol forthe Austrian military, ‘ competition it lost tothe Glock 17, and as such was intended far 2 very rugged environment where overall size was nat a major ‘consideration. The gas-delayed blowback feature of the GB was developed from a WW I German design fora simple semiautomatic rifle, the VG- [also referred to as the Bamitske system after its inventor) The gas-delay system of the GB uses the barrel as a stationary piston withthe slide acting as @ moving cylinder. Upon firing, propellant gasses anter the cylinder through bleed holes in thebarrel, end while the ges pressures high, prevent the slide from ‘opening until the bullet has lft thebarelandpressureshavereached safe evel Theadvantages ofthis typ of system are its mechanical simpliity anda self-regulating feature. The system uses only the pressures generated by the firing round and automatically varies itself to match them, regardless of bullet weight or velocity. The GB does not have @ conventional safety. Instead, it has a decacking lever on the slide that lowers the hammer on a loaded chamber. With the harimer lowered, the firing pin is locked in place and will ot move until the hammer is cacked either by pulling the trigger, ‘ouble-action mode, or manually withthe thumb, single-actionmode. ‘The Steyr GB (the GE stands for Gazbremser or Gas Brake in English, isa very strong and reliable weapon with excellent ergonometrics incorporated into its design. This allows it to be accurate and comfartable to shoot. The safety system prevents there being any switch to be released before fring, Simply point the weapon and pull the trigger. The gas system of the GB allows for any type of 19mm ammunition to!be used. It also cushions the ecoil, adding to the weapon's firing comfort and increasing its accuracy in rapid fire, The sight system includes luminous dots thatare simply aligned in.a row to allow for aiming in low light conditions. The squared off and checkered front ofthe trigger quard add to the security ofa two hhanded hold, One of the drawbacks of the GB is tha itis relatively large, which makes it somewhat difficult to shoot for people with small hands and limits its concealablity.
