Unabated famine in colonial Bengal that it was difficult to carry on activities of the people.
Farm labourers began selling off their children.
Many people were dying and disease was spreading fast.
Famine was all over and were common place in india yet Mughal had set up a system of
graneries to keep food flowing
Tax was collected forcibly and sepoy platoons were sent to the countryside to collect the
taxes
Starving families were expected to pay up
Company merchants were hoarding grain and there were complaints
All across the streets of Calcutta there were cries of starvation and suffering people pleaded
for mercy and food
Many animals died of starvation , people could not touch fish and the river was full of
carcasses.
The company officials were happy that the taxes were received and while Bengal lay racked
up in famine .
Post 1770s the word spread about company inhumanity
