OBJECTIVES

1.I will extract DNA from the

fruits
That we eat such as strawberry
by following
DNA extraction protocol.

2. I will explain the purpose of

each step in the extraction
procedure as it relates to the
physical and biochemical
characteristic of cells.
INTRODUCTION
Have you ever wondered how
scientists extract DNA from an
organism? All living organisms
have DNA, which is short for
deoxyribonucleic acid; it is
basically the blueprint for
everything that happens inside an
organism’s cells. Overall, DNA tells
an organism how to develop and
function, and is so important that
this complex compound is found in
virtually every one of its cells. In
this activity you’ll make your own
DNA extraction kit from household
chemicals and use it to separate
DNA from strawberries.
HYPOTHESIS

the temperature of the Ethanol

affects the amount of DNA
extracted from a Strawberry. My
hypothesis is that the hot
ethanol at temperature 62 C
might not work because the
ethanol might evaporate, then
there won't be enough Ethanol
to break the cell wall.
MATERIALS
1.Rubbing alcohol
2.Measuring cup
3.Measuring spoons
4.Salt
5.Water
6.Dishwashing liquid (for hand-washing dishes)
7.Glass or small bowl
8.Cheesecloth
9.Funnel
10.Tall drinking glass
11.Three strawberries
12.Resealable plastic sandwich bag
13.Small glass jar (such as a spice or baby
food jar)
14.Bamboo skewer, available at most grocery
stores. (If you use a baby food or short spice
jar, you could substitute a toothpick for the
skewer.)
RESULTS

Observe the line between the

strawberry mixture and the
alcohol. You will notice a white
thread-like cloud appearing at
this line. This is strawberry DNA.
The DNA will clump together
and float to the top of the
alcohol layer.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that from my experiment and the
research that DNA from different foods does vary and in
appearance as well. The DNA was extracted due to the
dishwashing liquid/detergent busts open the cells of the
fruit, releasing the DNA and the salt helps as it ensures that
the proteins in the cells are not separated from the rest of
the solution with the DNA. The Isopropyl rubbing alcohol
allows me to see the DNA because when molecules are
insoluble the clump together and become visible so the
alcohol makes the DNA insoluble making it become visible.

By using the amount of DNA found in foods such as

strawberries, kiwis and bananas scientist and farmers will
be able to benefit as they will be able to genetically modify
foods. Genetically modifying foods is any alteration of
genetic material to make them capable of producing new
substances or performing new functions. These
improvements to the food will make it disease resistant
which will stop pests and other problems from destroying
the food which will save farmers money as they would not
lose any crops also scientist could genetically modify the
fruit to be resilient to different weather climates so farmers
could grow without worrying about their crops when
droughts occur. By changing the genes in the DNA of the
food farmers are able to produce better quality food for
human consumption and even choose desired
characteristics for certain fruits like making strawberries
seedless.
