User Guide to activate GitHub Copilot

in Siemens AG
After you have requested your GitHub Copilot access via the self-service in Forms,
you will get access within the next two hours! Don’t start working with GitHub Copilot
before you received the mail shown in step 1!
You might be excited to get started, but it is obligatory to read and follow the rest of
this guide before you install the plugin and log into GitHub Copilot!
As you have been granted access to GitHub Copilot for Business through Siemens’ GitHub
Enterprise Account using Azure Active Directory login, there are a few things to be aware of.

1. After you have requested your license, you will receive an email confirmation within
the next 2h. It will look like this:
2. As your GitHub Enterprise account on GitHub.com is separate from your personal
GitHub account, please make sure to sign out of your personal GitHub account. To
do this, visit https://github.com/ in your default browser and make sure you are not
signed in. If you are signed in, please sign out.

Now you should be on the GitHub.com landing page:

3. Now visit the Siemens GitHub Enterprise page:

On this page, you will be asked to authenticate through identity provider. Clicking
“Continue” will redirect you to your Azure Active Directory Login Page where you can
sign into GitHub.

4. Now you will be redirected to a Microsoft Login page. Please login to your Siemens
Account and you are successfully added to the Copilot Org! If you are logged in
once, you can also directly login with your username. To find out your username,
click on your avatar on the upper right corner:

Now that you are signed in to GitHub.com in your default browser, using your
Siemens account equipped with access to GitHub Copilot for Business, you can
return to your IDE. Within your Code Editor install the GitHub Copilot Extension and
Sign in to GitHub Copilot.

• JetBrains IDEs
• Vim/Neovim
Please make sure you are logged into your GitHub.com Copilot account (ending with
“_SAGCP”) in your IDE for which the organization “GitHub-Copilot-Siemens” grants
you access to GitHub Copilot!
Example installation in Visual Studio Code:

Log out of your github.com accounts in Visual Studio Code first, if you are logged in!

Navigate to your extensions, search for GitHub Copilot, and click on install. After that, please
close Visual Studio Code and restart it!

Press “Sign in to GitHub” in the notification window!


Your browser opens. Make sure GitHub vor VS Code wants to access your _SAGCP
account. Click on “Authorize Visual-Studio-Code” in your browser and go back to Visual
Studio Code.
Now you have successfully activated GitHub Copilot!

It is important that the organization “GitHub-Copilot-Siemens” has granted you


access to GitHub Copilot – only in this case you are using the right and compliant
“GitHub Copilot for business license”.

GitHub Copilot Chat


In Visual Studio Code, the Copilot Chat is automatically downloaded with GitHub Copilot!
You can find the Copilot chat in the left navigation bar with the following item:

Navigate to your extensions, search for GitHub Copilot, and click on download. After that,
please close Visual Studio!

When you see this window, click on modify and the installation will start. When the
installation is finished, reopen Visual Studio!

Click on “Add GitHub Account” and add your account ending with _SAGCP (see instruction
before)
Click on “+Add” to add your GitHub Account.

Choose your “_SAGCP” account and click continue!


Click on Authorize GitHub and to activate GitHub Copilot!

It is important that the organization “GitHub-Copilot-Siemens” has granted you


access to GitHub Copilot – only in this case you are using the right and compliant
“GitHub Copilot for business license”.

GitHub Copilot Chat


Navigate to your extensions, search for GitHub Copilot Chat, and click on download. After
that, please close Visual Studio!
When you see this window, click on modify and the installation will start. When the
installation is finished, reopen Visual Studio!

Navigate to “View” and click on GitHub Copilot Chat. GitHub Copilot Chat will open on the
right side of your Visual Studio (make sure you logged in in the step before to your _SAGCP
account while you installed GitHub Copilot)
